Book Description

October 2000
The F-5A/B Skoshi Tiger and F-5E Tiger II are perhaps the most un-appreciated aircraft of the Vietnam War. Its history in combat over Vietnam has yet to be told and understood.
Utilized by the Republic of Vietnam Air force, it was the backbone of air defense. Little known is the fact that the Skoshi tigers flew combat air patrols over North Vietnam. It was also used extensively as a ground attack aircraft, capable of carrying 8,000 pounds of ordnance. The F-5 was the first and only supersonic aircraft in the Vietnamese inventory.
With its low visual cross section, coupled with its high speed, the F-5 was extremely survivable in combat. Several F-5As returned to base after sustaining missile hits in their engine tailpipes. Designed as a reliable and maintainable aircraft, these features were put to good use by the Vietnamese in greatly expanded sortie-generation rates.
The author, Anthony Tambini, has first-hand knowledge of F-5 and the Republic of Vietnam Air Force, having spent three years as a civilian technical advisor. He has documented the history of the F-5 in service with the Vietnam Air Force.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Intro to the F-5 Freedom Fighter, July 27, 2010

This review is from: F-5 Tigers over Vietnam (Paperback)
This is a short book, author Anthony Tambini had a lot of personal history working with the F-5 as a technical rep for the South Vietnam Air Force. He admits his love of the aircraft and you can see why. A supersonic, easy to maintain, cheap airplane that could carry a lot of bombs and be a good fighter? Built by the US? Yup.

The F-5 saw its combat debut in Vietnam, did very well there. Rugged, reliable it was even used at Top Gun schools because it flew a lot like the Mig-21. The best part about this book is the author's experience with the South Vietnam air force and how/where this plane flew. There are some line drawings and charts/data/statistics.

The photos are all B&W and small. This is not a book for modelers, but anyone interested in this very effective jet fighter/bomber's operational history. Warbird Tech has a book in its series that is about the same price, has color and is a bigger book.
