A Very Timely Cookbook for Hard Times,
By
This review is from: The Tight Budget Cookbook: Delicious and Nutritious Recipes for the Frugal Cook (Paperback)
We love that the recipes in The Tight Budget Cookbook use plenty of fresh produce and items you may already have in your pantry. The cost per recipe and per serving breakdown at the end of each recipe is helpful. Would make a great holiday gift for students and seniors or a perfect housewarming gift for someone moving into their first home or apartment.Who says food on a budget has to be boring? The Tight Budget Cookbook proves otherwise!

If ever there were a 'kitchen cook' friendly compilation of low-cost, nutritious, delicious recipes guaranteed to be as palate pleasing and as appetite satisfying as their ingredients and preparation are easy on the pocket book, Heidi Smalheiser's "The Tight Budget Cookbook" is the one! Featuring a culinary wealth of terrific breakfast dishes for as little as 4 cents a serving, combined with main dishes that include meat for as little as 51 cents a serving, "The Tight Budget Cookbook" truly lives up to its name. Along with the usual list of ingredients as cooking instructions, each featured recipe is enhanced with serving size, individual serving cost, number of servings, as well as a breakdown of calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, and sodium per serving. The cornucopia of recipes themselves range from Quick Skillet Lasagna; Butternut Squash with Black Beans; Roasted Herb Potatoes; and 5-a-Day Salad; to Baked Lemon Chicken; Veggie Bean Wrap with Avocado and Mangos; Microwave-Baked Apple; and Pineapple Rice Bake. "The Tight Budget Cookbook" is the ideal addition to any personal or family cookbook collection for those affected by the current economic recession -- and beyond!

Good, Basic Cookbook - Especially Good for Beginners!,

I've made several recipes from this book and they've all turned out well. This would be a great book for a beginner cook. The recipes are easy to prepare and require no exotic ingredients or fancy equipment. Most of the recipes use whole foods but don't include a huge list of ingredients. The meals themselves are pretty healthful and can be made with minimal fuss. Overall, a very solid little cookbook.

The recipes in this book are very basic, if you have any experience or skill in the kitchen, it probably won't give you any ideas you don't already have. I bought it when I moved into my first apartment and had just started cooking for myself though, and I used it quite a bit. I've since moved on to more complicated cooking, so I passed this book on to my younger sister, as she is a freshman in college this year. Looking back over it, there is a good balance of meat and vegetarian recipes, all very easy to understand. It also has a pretty good mix of canned and fresh ingredients, which keeps the cost and time for each recipe down. A lot of recipes are very basic with few ingredients, but still definitely better than the traditional college meal of easy mac. All in all, this is a good book to get your feet wet if you've never really cooked for yourself before, but want to try.

It's obvious that the person writing this book is indeed "frugal." There are no frills about this book, so don't expect pictures or entertaining stories. However, there is a good deal of information and recipes regarding cooking on the very cheap.
