In south-central Texas, an imprisoned electronic surveillance expert is granted an early release from prison--with a catch. I have led an unexpected life. Grew up in the city, but married a cowboy and moved to a remote west Texas ranch. Raised my two amazing children in the country with horses and dogs and cats and wild animals, but at the same time, traveled the country researching crime novels with law enforcement officers of all types. An independent and unabashed feminist who opposed the Iraq war, I still stayed married for more than 30 years to the same wonderful man and sent my son to fight with the Marines in Iraq twice. Both my kids are strong and independent too, and remain my biggest fans; they are the accomplishment of which I am most proud, even after publishing eleven books. My daughter pursued her craft, acting, in London, New York, and now, L.A. My son is out of the Marines and would like to see the war end sooner than later so his buddies can come home. And I'm still married to the same sexy cowboy.

This book was probably one of the best suspense books I have ever read. Right from the first page it grabs you. Rebekah "Max" has just served 7 years in prison for protecting her daughter from her abusive ex-husband. A man that has a sick fondness for little girls. When Max is ready to leave prison she is offered the job of a lifetime. Too good to be true, especially when the FBI confront her to take the job and be their spy. Fearing for the life of her daughter and mother she takes the job only to find out that there's more than she had ever guessed. She is a pawn in a game of deceit in all directions and it's up to her to save everyone and hope for a future with her daughter. Great on the edge of your seat read.

I read this book in matter of hours. It is one that I couldn't put down ... I even stopped a movie in the middle of its playing so I could read this book. I even told my husband to go play on the computer so I could finish this book. It was one of the riveting reads of the year. If my mom hadn't loaned it to me, I would have never heard of it.This is your typical mystery but it is so untypical how Mills twist and turn all the clues till you, as the reader, are clueless along with Max, the heroine of the book. However, you do start guessing the outcome and hold your breath in hopes you're right. What a read!!! Max had just spent seven years in jail for protecting her daughter, Gaby. She refused to let her ex-husband, a Judge, to have anything to do with Gaby since he is a monster. Right before she got out, she was recruited by two companies, the FBI and a surveillance company due to the expertise she has had with surveillance tools before she was thrown into jail. And the story takes off, leaving you hanging breathless till the ending. It is not my typical read ~~ but hey, one needs to have fun once in awhile! =) This is a fun read, guaranteed to keep you reading till the last page is turned. So I recommend this book as a beach read or a lounging around read ... prepare yourself for a several hours of relaxing time and take your time in reading this book. Don't plan any activities till this book is done. It's just too fun to stop halfway just to do the laundry (or even answer the doorbell!). It is riveting read ... one that will keep you on your toes! 2-18-02
