Book Description

Everyone dreams of tropical escape. But what happens when you escape for too long?

Imagine spending 24 hours a day with your spouse in 31 not-so-square feet . . . for years; crossing the Pacific Ocean on two gallons of fuel; and tossing spaghetti marinara around your living room, then cleaning it up while bouncing like ice in a martini shaker. Tightwads on the Loose tells the story of Wendy and Garth, lured to sea by the promise of adventure. They buy a 31-foot boat that fits their budget better than it fits Garth's large frame and set sail for an open-ended voyage, never imagining they'd be gone seven years, or cover 34,000 miles at the pace of a fast walk.

They live without most “necessities” and learn that teamwork and a sense of humor matter most as they face endless "character-building opportunities." They make a long-anticipated visit to the island where Garth had been shipwrecked as a teenager, only to find it had become a penal colony. An electronic catastrophe in the Solomon Islands leaves them without navigation equipment, which forces them to trade their free-wheeling lifestyle for one that seems straight out of a '60s sitcom: jobs at a U.S. Army base in the Marshall Islands. In Asia, they dodge typhoons and ships that threaten to turn their home into kindling. Finally they endure a grueling 49-day nonstop ocean crossing. None of this prepares them for their arrival "home" to a post-9/11 America which leaves them wondering what had changed more, them or the world.

Tightwads on the Loose offers a fun read to the armchair adventurer -- or anyone afflicted with wanderlust."

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A light-hearted tone and unaffected style make this an entertaining tale." San Francisco Book Review "
"Charming" and "a pleasure to read." Sailing Magazine
A compelling read, "Tightwads on the Loose: a Seven Year Pacific Odyssey" flows as an adventure narrative with a "you are there" flavor. Ms. Hinman is as competent with the written word as she is at sea. And she clearly has a sense of humor." Mike Dillon, Magnolia News
"Alternately hilarious, exciting and thought provoking, Tightwads on the Loose tells what happens when two people with very disparate personalities set out in a too small boat with a too small budget. It will take you on a glorious romp around the Pacific." Elsie Hulsizer, author Glaciers, Bears and Totems and Voyages to Windward
"Enjoy a wild ride with Wendy Hinman's Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey. The pragmatist and the dreamer make entertaining travel companions, and the places they visit capture the imagination." - Janna Cawrse Esarey, author of The Motion of the Ocean
"Lively, thoughtful and entertaining. As the best cruising memoirs do, "Tightwads" rises above the pack by providing more than just the vicarious thrill of experiencing exotic anchorages and storms at sea. Hinman adeptly takes readers on a vividly detailed journey, but the book also delves deeper." - Three Sheets Northwest
"What an incredible book! I couldn't put it down. I savored every word. It was so evocative and exciting reading about places I always wanted to visit. I loved the color and the mystery and the personal parts about their relationship." Donna J. Moore, author of Out of the Fog

This is the story of Wendy and Garth who lived their dream life on a sailing adventure that lasted 7 years. I loved this story because Wendy and Garth planned for this voyage, saved their paychecks, quit their 9 to 5 jobs and made it happen. They escaped. Ran away, so to speak, and they lived on about $33 dollars a day. This book is both funny and exciting. The narrative perks along with lots of humor. I laughed when they had to get jobs on an Army base for 2 years when their equipment broke down and felt the grip of excitemnt with the typhoons in Japan--exactly why I'm more comfortable as an armchair sailor. Read it yourself and find out what it was like returning to a post 9-11 world after living the dream life. This isn't a book I'd normally choose off the shelf to read, but it was hard to put down once I got started. I'd read it again and recommend it to friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tightwads On The Loose November 25, 2012
By J.R.
Format:Paperback
It's a tremendous book, - perfect blend of excitement, novelty and human insight. Literally, I couldn't put this story aside; - stayed up too late many nights wondering how Wendy and Garth were going to get out of whatever situation/nautical disaster they'd stumbled into. Heavens, - just how many times on earth did Garth resurrect that blasted motor? Couldn't decide if it should have been canonized or smashed to oblivion. Surely they'll bring two motors next time and carry at least a few spare parts...Tinfoil, bobby-pins and ingenuity can only get you so far! J.R.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom of Spirit Lived September 29, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A great read for anyone harboring a wanderlust and desire to live apart from the usual mundane life. Make no mistake, this couple did not choose a worry free life style, but one in which they were fully engaged on an individual level to meet obstacles presented to them on a day to day basis, and one on which their very lives were often at stake. The reader is aware that the protagonists of this story were fully alive and I for one felt the tingle of what it met to be so. I especially felt the author's concern about ending this journey and what that might mean personally, and to each other as a couple. Much to ponder here above and beyond the fact that this is a great adventure story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Share the journey with Wendy and Garth June 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Delightful tail of a cruising couple. As a long time Kwaj resident I could relate to Wendy's experience there, it's major seduction is that your efforts can make a difference. I was also and merchant marine officer so I traveled the world tied to a ship and I was also a liveaboard on a 26 ft sailboat. Almost all marinas are full of dreams tied up not going anywhere. Not for this couple they live their dream, Wendy takes you along on her adventures. The writing is good but the rich experience she has to share is what really makes the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Loved It September 30, 2013

Just kept your interest in what it takes to do this kind of extreme sailing.
I love to travel but no way could I do this. This takes special people to be able to sail and endure all they went through.
Great writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Telling it like it is! December 9, 2013
By Rick
Format:Paperback
A great read! Loved it! As a current cruiser who has cruised some of the same waters as Wendy and Garth, I can tell you that Wendy tells it like it is! You want to find out what cruising is like on a small boat without going cruising? Then this book is for you. It happened in the near past so it is information that is relatively current and not decades old addressing situations as they once were. This story could at times have come from our own experiences. These are the kinds of things that you will experience in various ports throughout the world and along they way to those ports. Some good and some not so good.

If you plan to go cruising in the near future or think you might want to, read this book!

If you are looking for what boat to buy, how to outfit your cruising boat, where to go, what to do, and so many other things of that nature, there are many other books out there that speak to those things. From what she says in her book you might infer things like what size and configuration of boat you might think you need and how it might need to be outfitted and why. However, that is not the purpose of this publication and you should not expect those things to be directly discussed. Instead, look at why they chose as they did and how that affected their lives afloat and ashore.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Haze grey and underway" January 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Creatively etching out every picture of this voyage was amazing! Taking time to explain the simplest details of a canoe brought readers like me alongside you as you were anxiously awaiting action from Garth for up close shots!! The detail of underworld sea life and life above the sea rolling in the white caps while entrenched in your cockpit was vivid! This story delivers a yes you can do it spirit for those that are questioning whether they can undertake this challenge. For me, living in close quarters with hubby of twenty five years would have sent me swimming for shore in the first five minutes ; however, you two understand the ways of sailing and working as a team on a vessel. Kudos! I enjoyed, savored and thrived from your book thank you! Looking forward to boat building 101 and launching anew!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read March 25, 2014

I really enjoyed Wendy's writing style, and the story of their journey sucked me in from the first chapter. Wendy does a great job of balancing aspects of the sailing with cultural and historical insights of the places they visited. If Garth keeps his promise, I look forward to reading the next chapter in their adventure – or perhaps even bumping into them in some distant harbor.

More About the Author

Wendy Hinman's quest for adventure took her on a seven-year Pacific odyssey aboard a 31-foot boat with her husband. She fell in love with voyaging so much she never wanted to return, despite the fact that her husband couldn't stand and, in stormy conditions, their light boat occasionally turned into their own private torture chamber. Fortunately she did return, and she shares a humorous take on their adventures afloat in her book, Tightwads on the Loose. She shows us that though we can live without what many would consider "necessities," a sense of humor is mandatory. She is an inspiring speaker, who offers insight on following our dreams wherever they may lead.

Reviews for Tightwads on the Loose:

"Tightwads on the Loose; a Seven Year Pacific Odyssey vividly details the highs and lows of life at sea and at port. It will definitely appeal for those who are curious about sea voyaging. Armchair travelers will find a diversity of cultural experiences, historical details, and adventures for their entertainment and education. Come on board and sail away with the intrepid Wendy Hinman and her humorous and ingenious insights about life at sea." Chanticleer Book Reviews

"Dreams of freedom and adventure: For most people, they remain just that -- dreams. For certain others, like Wendy Hinman and Garth Wilcox, such dreams are the stuff life is. In 2000 the couple set sail from Puget Sound for a Pacific Odyssey in their 31-foot cutter, Velella. Seven years later, the couple returned home. Along the way, they logged some 34,000 nautical miles, touched 19 countries, endured typhoons, experienced close calls with freighters, potential pirates and phantom night vessels, swam in snake and crocodile infested waters and made do without refrigeration and Internet. A compelling read, "Tightwads on the Loose: a Seven Year Pacific Odyssey" flows as an adventure narrative with a "you are there" flavor. Ms. Hinman had done plenty of professional writing before the voyage: She's as competent with the written word as she is at sea. And she clearly has a sense of humor -- a necessary, conjugal survival tool within the confines of a 31-foot boat small enough to prevent her husband from standing straight up." Mike Dillon, Magnolia News

"Alternately hilarious, exciting and thought provoking, Tightwads on the Loose tells what happens when two people with very disparate personalities set out in a too small boat with a too small budget. Tightwads on the Loose will take you on a glorious romp around the Pacific."
Elsie Hulsizer, author of Glaciers, Bears and Totems and Voyages to Windward

"Enjoy a wild ride with Wendy Hinman's Tightwads on the Loose: A Seven Year Pacific Odyssey. The pragmatist and the dreamer (at one point Wendy likens herself to Tinker Bell) make entertaining travel companions, and the places they visit capture the imagination."
- Janna Cawrse Esarey, author of The Motion of the Ocean

"In this e-age of shoddy, sloppy sea yarns, it is nice to discover a wordsmith who cares how the words fall upon the page. Wendy Hinman does. She crafts each sentence with care. She is a pleasure to read. I enjoyed this book right from the title. Funny, too!" Cap'n Fatty Goodlander, Editor-at-Large of Cruising World magazine.

"Hinman's self-effacting style and eye for the hilarious make the seven-year 34,000 mile tale a pleasure to read." Sailing Magazine
