Book Description

October 13, 2009
Tigran Petrosian (1929-1984) was World Chess Champion from 1963 to 1969 and was one of the strongest players in the world throughout his lengthy career. Petrosian was a Candidate for the World Championship on eight occasions (1953, 1956, 1959, 1962, 1971, 1974, 1977 and 1980). He won the world championship in 1963 by defeating Botvinnik, successfully defended it in 1966 against Spassky, and lost it in 1969 to Spassky. Thus, he was the defending World Champion or a World Champion Candidate in ten consecutive three-year cycles. This book was originally published in Descriptive Chess Notation. Since that time, Descriptive has become almost obsolete. For that reason, all 50 games in this book have been converted into modern Algebraic Notation and are included in an appendix in the back of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Petrosian for prophylactics, strategy, and defense, June 17, 2004
This book was a tough find, but I loved it. I also read one of the Clarke books on Petrosian. I have read games collections of these masters: Capablanca, Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Petrosian, Karpov. I would rank them #1 Capablanca, #2 Petrosian with props to Smyslov, as well, in terms of instructional value for the developing intermediate or intermediate-advanced player.

When will there be a current Best Games of Tigran Petrosian rendered? The "Russian School of Chess" (Dvoretsky) frequently cites Petrosian's work for its instructional value.
Dr. John Nunn, are you listening???

5.0 out of 5 stars IM Silman raves about how great this book is, August 10, 2006
Here is what noted chess teacher IM Silman had to say about this book:

TIGRAN PETROSIAN, HIS LIFE AND GAMES by Vasiliev (247 pages, hardcover, Batsford). One of my all-time favorite books. If this doesn't turn you into a fan of Petrosian, nothing will.

He also wrote:

This guy's games astounded me, and my copy of the excellent "Tigran Petrosian, his life and games" by Vasiliev virtually fell apart from overuse! These games had a profound effect on my style, though trying to play like Petrosian and actually playing like him are two very different animals.
