5.0 out of 5 stars Showcases three popular and award-winning children's picturebook stories, August 11, 2005
This review is from: Tikki Tikki Tembo... and More Favorite Tales (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
Tikki Tikki Tembo And More Favorite Tales showcases three popular and award-winning children's picturebook stories adapted for DVD and enthusiastically recommended for children ages 3 to 9. Include is Arlene Mosel's Tikki Tikki Tembo (illustrated by Blair Lent) about what happened in ancient China when the first son of a Chinese family gave him such a grand, long name that proved to be a bit dangerous for the boy! Hot Hippo written by Mwenye Hadithi and illustrated by Adrienne Kennaway is the story of a hippopotamus that wanted to live in the wter like the fishes instead on the hot dray land. But wouldNgai (the god of Everything and Everywhere) give Hippo permission to do so? Produced by the National Film Board of Canada, and The Tender Tale Of Cinderella Penguin by Janet Perlman offers a new webfooted twist on the classic fairytale of Cinderella. With a total running time of 59 minutes, this DVD features three extra bonus stories: The Happy Lion, The Magic Of Anansi, and Little Red Riding Hood. Children can read along with the stories, access interactive menus, enjoy the DVD story selection and Auto-Play features. Also very highly recommended for family, school, and community library Video/DVD collections for children is the Scholastic Video Collection DVD release The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate The Wash And More Back-to-School Stories (NVG-9727, $14.95, 46 minutes). Both Tikki Tikki Tembo and The Day Jimmy's Boat Ate The Wash are also available in a VHS format ($9.95 each).

4.0 out of 5 stars The Hardest Review I've Written, September 9, 2007

This review is from: Tikki Tikki Tembo... and More Favorite Tales (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
How can I write review this? How SHOULD I review this?

First, let me say that this: the Scholastic DVDs are the only DVDs that I feel confident having my 6-year-old watch. He never sits there bouncing up and down till I think he will explode. He never walks away from the viewing bouncing off the walls (which is the result of most DVD viewing)... and he absolutely LOVES the stories on here, including Tikki Tikki Tembo.

I just would have to pray that parents out there don't let this be the ONLY experience their children have of this wonderful story. There is a flow to the story that the narrator misses. My 20-year-old son was recently home and he listened to about 3 "pages" worth and had to leave the room. "Mom, he's KILLING the story! I can't take it." If a parent is a good oral reader they can bring this story alive in a more memorable way, so while I would say go ahead and buy the DVD, young children love them and they are some of the most wholesome out there for kids these modern days, also PLEASE buy or borrow the book, and share the one-on-one time and bring the book alive to your child yourself so that when he watches the DVD your rendering may be tied to it in some magical way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tikki Tikki Tembo...and More Favorite Tales, October 24, 2005
This review is from: Tikki Tikki Tembo... and More Favorite Tales (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
Both of my pre-school children love this video. It is a great one to watch after bath time while we put on pajamas and comb out hair. They love the action and adventure of the story. My kids especially love the story of Cinderella Penguin.
All in all, my kids and I love all the Scholastic Videos. They are well done, and give the kids a love for stories and literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gently Moving Pictures Just Right For Young Children, April 24, 2007

This review is from: Tikki Tikki Tembo... and More Favorite Tales (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
Classic stories told with "gently moving pictures and audio". None of the fast editing and loud noises so common in children's DVDs. My four year old daughter really enjoys this one and requests it often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tikki Tikki Tembo - One of My Favorite Stories, September 18, 2009
This review is from: Tikki Tikki Tembo... and More Favorite Tales (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
Tikki Tikki Tembo is still one of my favorite stories. I have many Asian students so I still use the story often as a teacher. The kids love to try to say the rhyme and practice it. The story is told well on this Scholastic DVD. One of the best animated stories is The Tender Story of Cinderella Penguin, which doesn't read the story of the picture book but portray it in wordless animation. It's beautiful and from the National Film Board of Canada. This is a terrific DVD of children's stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars great extras, May 8, 2009
This review is from: Tikki Tikki Tembo... and More Favorite Tales (Scholastic Video Collection) (DVD)
The bland treatment of the title story was disappointing for a young fan of the book, but all five other stories appealed much more. Don't miss the three cartoons on the Extras menu!
