A Spectacular Photo Tribute to the RCAF at War!, May 6, 2010
This review is from: Til We Meet Again: Recapturing Moments of the Rcaf in World War II (Hardcover)
'TIL WE MEET AGAIN by professional photographer John McQuarrie is a photo-and-text tribute to RCAF aircraft and airmen of World War II. Subtitled RECAPTURING MOMENTS OF THE RCAF IN WORLD WAR II, it offers stunning images of aircraft flown by RCAF pilots/aircrews along with several accounts of wartime flying by RCAF veterans. It's a lovely package full of wonderful images.
'TIL WE MEET AGAIN offers up 170-odd pages depicting the various trainers, fighters, bombers and transports flown by RCAF personnel during the war. So, the reader is treated to full-color shots of Tiger Moths, Stearmans, Harvards, Stinsons, Cornells, Ansons, Cranes, Lancs, B-17s, Catalinas, Dakotas, Warhawks, Avengers, Spits, Hurris and Corsairs along with the odd Bf 109 and a Vampire jet! Many of the photographs are air-to-air and are simply wonderful. And many of the aircraft are in RCAF colors. (The aircraft were owned by the Old Flying Machine Company, CATP Museum, Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association, Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight).
McQuarrie includes about ten reminiscences by RCAF vets but the book's main selling point is the super collection of images. Book designer David O'Malley contributes some nicely-done and evocative color illustrations of RCAF aircrew and aircraft as well.
All in all, 'TIL WE MEET AGAIN is a wondrous book, great eye-candy for air combat buffs. I would have enjoyed far more reminiscences though. Recommended.
