This item arrived super fast and has some wonderful features. Admittedly this is my first ever vacuum sealer, so I did look at all of the machines offered on amazon first before ordering. After doing so, I was fairly certain that I was getting exactly what I wanted. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of use. It has the built in cutter which is awesome for cutting the rolls of bags. I find it's very easy to use and cuts very quickly and cleanly. You also only have to hold the lid on the machine down for 3-5 seconds before releasing it to get a seal. It goes on it's own and is called a hands free model. I love this feature! It also comes with a bunch of containers with lids that allow you to seal them closed with the accompanying hose attachment. I've not yet used this but am looking forward to doing so. I plan on using them to store dry goods like sugar and pasta and maybe some rice and flour. That way I don't have to worry about bugs or heat getting to them. It also came with a wide mouth jar sealer, which I am looking forward to using for dry goods storage too. I was also deeply impressed by how much stuff it came with to get me started. A whole roll of bags (that you cut), as well as some large (non roll) bags, and some medium sized non roll bags too. It was an awesome get started kit and I got a lot of use from it.

All in all I am very pleased with this purchase. I think this is a great vacuum sealer for anyone, but especially those who have never owned one before, due to ease of use and extra accessories that it comes with. Great package deal!

This product does all it claims and more. I owned a small food saver years ago, right after they were put on the market, and I loved it. When it wore out, I decided to go with the same manufacturer. I did purchase a product that also vacuum seals cannisters as well as the bags and am tickled to death with my choice. I recommend this product for large or small families, it will make a difference in your overall food bill because of the better freezer protection that prevents less food spoilage.

I purchased my V850 roughly 6 months ago and only used it to seal meat so it definitely was NOT being over used! For the first 6 months everything was great. But yesterday it quit working. I had just sealed a bag of ground round, and when I went to seal the bottom of another bag (so I could put meat into it), the machine sounded like it was working, but it didn't shut off. I ended up having to hit the "cancel" button and when I opened the unit to take the bag out, it hadn't sealed. It turns out the heat strip never got hot.

I called the customer support line for the unit and when I told the gentleman on the other end of the line about my problem he immediately told me that he knew EXACTLY what the problem was and that I needed to replace the rubber gasket. When I asked him how he knew this he told me it was because of the model number. According to him, the units you have to push on, regularly fail because of the gasket. It might have been nice if I had known this BEFORE I purchased the unit! In the end I had to pay $8.95 to have them ship me a new gasket. Hopefully it will get here soon.

(UPDATE)...My gasket got here and (as predicted by other reviewers!) my unit STILL didn't work! It seems the manufacter tries to sell a new gasket to anyone who calls them when their heat strip doesn't work! I've also noticed that since I wrote the original review, the company has "revised" the design of the food sealer. Evidently there were a LOT of the original units that had faulty heating units in them. I would strongly suggest that you think twice before purchasing a food sealer made by this company. In my case they did NOT stand behind their product and they sold me a useless gasket when they knew the actual problem was their faulty design!

Let the buyer beware...!

I admit I was off to a rough start when I first got this unit and made several poor seals before the wife ironed out the proper procedure and set us on the right track. Poor performance is absolutely operator error, this unit is outstanding and I've enjoyed sealing all kinds of foodstuff for a few months now. This is how I do it. I open the top and roll out enough material to hold the food and then a bit. Over time, I've developed a good idea of how much to roll out, keep in mind you are using up about 50 cents to $1 of material per seal, replacement rolls are quite pricey. The knob should be in the "cut only" position, press lid down and cut the bag. Now this is where I was initially screwing up. At this point, you must open the top and re-roll the plastic roll back, uncovering the suction area bounded by the black sealing gasket. Close the lid, turn the knob to the "vacuum and seal" position and press down the lid. After a few seconds of operation, you can let it go and it will complete its cycle, creating a seal on one end of the rolled out material. Lift lid, remove the bag that will now have one end sealed and put food in the bag. Lay the edge to be sealed into the trough that is framed by the black sealing material. You must leave enough slack in the bag length to ensure that the lid can close properly and finish the seal, this is what takes practice. Make sure the knob is in the "vacuum and seal" position and press the lid down. You can let go after a few seconds and the machine will complete the suction and sealing cycle. Works every single time.

I had all the same feelings as others about my first foodsaver. Easy to use and seems like it will be great. HOWEVER... It decides when to work and not work for me. I cut off a bag, wait 30 secs. put in food and seal the other end. It's great. THEN when I try to do a second bag of food, it just won't start up. I wait... and wait... try again...and wait more... try again and suddenly it decides to work fine again???
Anybody else have this problem or is mine just plain defective???

I like the Foodsaver product, I've had three or four now. I'd like to find one that last more then a year. For a little more then a year maybe two they work well, but after time the sealing element of the Foodsaver fails. It vacuums but doesn't seal.

I've only used this machine a handful of times, so in my opinion, it's brand new. Each and every single time however, I've had nothing but issues such as the seal wasn't complete and it let all the air out of the bag or the vacuum never quite sucked out all the air. I had another FoodSaver before this one, and I was completely happy with its performance until the vacuum motor stopped working. I bought this one thinking I was getting an upgrade...HA! This afternoon, I tried one more time and got nothing but another frustrating session of trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with it. I threw the thing in the trash!

This machine STINKS!!

When it works, the results are good. We have kept vacuum sealed food in the freezer for a year or more with no loss of quality. We bought one about 2 years ago and have used it only occasionally. We planned to use it to vacuum seal a significant amount of fresh produce. Got about 3 bags done when the unit crapped out and we were high and dry with no way to store it long term. Per other customer reviews, the problem appears to be a 2 cent gasket that they charge about 9 bucks for and you never know when it will go bad. There is NO SUPPORT. The website is USELESS. Did not even have our Model # on the site. Last one of this brand I will have.

I agree with others about this Food Saver model that does not give the performance of the previous models. You have to hold it down in a certain place for it to start working. Then it appears to be working according to the bag but after being in the freezer for a few days, air was in the bag. I contact the company and they said I needed the bottom gasket. However, it is not in stock! I have had this unit for about 4 years and believe in the purpose but this one is a bomb AND it's much larger than previous models and takes up a lot of room on the counter.

I got this for Christmas a couple of years ago. While it worked it was great. I have not used it that often, but now it won't even seal a new bag. I called the customer service number and their only solution was buying a new machine. If it's going to die after the few times I've used it, it's not worth it!
