Editorial Reviews

2008 release, a collection of rare songs, B-sides, comp tracks, outtakes, covers, and split releases. Included are songs from the out-of-print Moonpies For Misfits EP, their splits with Alkaline Trio and Leatherface, and five songs recorded over the span of their three albums on Epitaph. The selection of bands they cover is pretty insane too: Springsteen, Leatherface, Alkaline Trio, Government Issue, Midnight Oil, Circle Jerks, The Clash and Turbonegro. Includes new art and photos, plus a few pieces from out of-print records. The cover art is once again rendered by Scott Sinclair, who painted their previous record covers. No Idea Records.

This is not too bad of a comp album which ties up a few of the loose ends not offered by the "Never Ender" album. There's some really great, strong vintage HWM songs on here, and some not as strong ones. The ones for me that do hit the right chords are the songs off the "Split EP" with Leatherface and the songs off the "Moonpie For Misfits" EP and being a being an old school Midnight Oil fan I like the cover of "Dreamworld" as well as the Alkaline Trio covers. Fav songs being "Wrong And Righteous", "Caught Up", "Take As It Comes", "Moments Pass", "Another Way" & "Moonpies For Misfits". "Wayfarer" is a great song too, previously available on "Caution" though. But it's hard to go past the golden era of HWM with the 3 albums "Fuel For The Hate Game", "Forever And Counting" & "No Division".

I now officially own every HWM album except "A Flight and Crash" (though I've heard most of it) and "Never Ender." And I've decided I probably should have gone with "Never Ender" for those essential, rare tracks like "Loft," an early song that highlights this band's early genius. I also still want Chuck's solo album.

Basically, this latest release is scattered. I agree with a friend of mine who said, "it's amazing how it goes from rockin' to kinda sucky and then back to rockin' again." Unfortunately, the best song is one I already owned, which is the cover of Alkaline Trio's "Radio." It's still amazing, though. The newer songs, however, really aren't very creative, like "So Many Days," or "Home." Just listen to the guitars and drums, you'll notice they just fall short in terms of the breathtaking musicianship showncased on earlier albums.

Having said all this, this is probably a must-own for true HWM fans, because there are enough songs like "Seeing Diamonds," "Moments Pass" and of course the wonderful yet out-of-print song of the same album, "Moonpies for Misfits." So if you own everything else, you should go for it. Otherwise, scoop everything else up first, including The Draft.

For those of us from FloriDUH who frequented the Hardback, this is just another overproduced album purchased for the soul purpose of reminising. It's not terrible but it's no 'Forever & Counting'. I'm biased as I grew accustomed to the grit and sweat of the early records which is just not found here. Overall, if you like their newer stuff, you'll enjoy this disc.

Because I adore these guys- what they represent, how they live & love, and where they're from- I say support them and buy this album and every other record they put out. If your new to HWM, go with their earlier albums or the 'Live at the Hardback' comp from the "final show" in G-ville. Fans will recognize the bands progression from HWM-B.B. (before breakup) and appreciate their growth and journeys on 'Till the Wheels Fall Off'.

It's a great purchase. I love HWM and for them to come out with a CD, well you have to buy it. I mean some songs are repeats from other CDs but it's still worth it.
