This hat can take a terrible beating and it always does what is needed in keeping the sun away from your face and ears.
This is my second Tilley, I live in the tropics and they do wear out - but after 8 years I have no complaints.
I took the hat back to the store on a subsequent visit and the sales clerk replaced it free with no questions asked.

The Tilley hats are a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. The hat makes a huge difference when working in the sun. Recently, we did a landscaping project and the temperatures were hot and the sun oppressive, so the whole family was wearing the Tilley T4 hats. I suspect that we'll get many years of use out of these well made hats. We'll definitely be taking these hats on our annual hiking trip in Maine.

I've had the T4 for a several years now. It's an excellent choice for any outdoor activities. It's comfortable and keeps the sun off. It crunches up nicely when necessary and stays flat when not worn. For especially hot days, a more ventilated model might be preferrable.

As a bonus, these things fly very nicely and make wonderful emergency frisbees for dogs who are well trained enough to hand it back without chewing on it. I had played frisbee with it in a muddy field and when I got home, I popped it in the washer like the label says.

So I am removing a star because after washing it, the only time I did so, it shrank on me enough to need to be replaced. With an chronic arm injury, I just don't have the strength in it to stretch the hat back to size. But I'd think few would probably find themselves with such a muddy hat to begin with. I don't remember if I used warm or cold, but I did air dry it. So I keep it in the car now as a spare.

I ended up replacing it with a T3 in the next size up and only then realized the difference of the wider brim on the T4. I definitely prefer the T4, though both fly the same for the dog. The new size seems very loose in comparison. But washing it after the next muddy frisbee game should fix that nicely....

This was my third Tilley hat purchased and the first made of "cotton duck" material. I ordered it on Amazon, but this stock model and size was available only through a third-party retailer. Free shipping and free returns sold me on ordering the hat. It arrived well packed and gorgeous-looking, but without the cool curve like my other hats have or the dude in the picture has...if anyone knows the "shaping" secret, please let me know. This T4 model is a bit heavier than my LTM6 and T4MO models...if you can imagine sailcloth, this is the stuff. The crown actually is noticeable lower than my other models - the top of my head is always in contact with the top. For this reason, this hat is warmer in hotter weather, but perfect for the 50-75F sunny spring days that can still sunburn your face and head. The wind and chin cords insure you won't lose this hat to the wind (provided you fasten them when it is windy), but if you forget and it blows into the water..she floats. If somehow, you still lose it, within the first 2 years they'll replace it for 50% price, provided you mailed in the registration card to Tilley Endurables! Should you still have reservations and not believe all the positive reviews...order one and see for yourself...the shipping and return offer make it a risk-free proposition. If you do fall in love with your Tilley hats like I have and you love it so much it wears out, Tilley Endurables promises to replace it free of charge except for postage (again...mail in that registration card). What's not to love?

I currently own 4 Tilley hats--the T4 appropriately being #4. I really like these hats. When fit correctly, they ride comfortably on my head and provide shade where my hair is thinning and my face is getting splotchy. My dermatologist agreed with my choice of a Tilley when working outdoors under the summer sun and forgoing all those baseball caps I've collected for years.

The T4 was actually my second choice for a 4th Tilley. I originally ordered (from the Tilley website) one of the wide brimmed oiled cotton hats so I would have a water repellant hat for showers. Unfortunately, the oiled cotton hat was poorly sized and poorly shaped for my head (I think it was defective and mislabeled) and I did not particularly like the fabric. Instead of exchanging for another like hat, I decided to stick with the original cotton duck material with the wide brim. I think it's a good choice since it has taken a few showers and has proven to be water repellant enough for my purposes. I like the thickness of the fabric and the four grommeted vents help with ventilating the crown. Where I live, it is humid during hot weather. No headwear will keep you cool under those conditions but Tilley hats provide a bit of ventilation. I've found they work better than most straw hats in the heat.

Heed the Tilley advise on sizing. Order at least one size larger hat than you normally wear. This is necessary for the hat to fit loosely on the head and aid in air circulation. Forget about getting it in your normal size in order to keep the hat on under windy conditions. Use the straps. Both of them. I've worn Tilleys in light wind and heavy wind. The rear strap is fine for light breezes and also keeps the hat from falling off when you bend over. But in true wind, use both straps.

Pretty much top of the line in my opinion. Best quality I've seen in a long time. I'll buy again.

This is my second Tilley, I live in the tropics and they do wear out - but after 8 years I have no complaints. I even used to dive in the Red Sea with my Tilley stuffed down my BCD so it was ready for when I surfaced!
