Tilley Endurables, Inc. story begins in 1980. A man, named Alex Tilley, needed a sailing hat to go with his sailboat. This man had tenderly and lovingly restored his sailboat. When it came time for him to go for a sail, he realized that none of his hats could match the quality that he expected in a hat. He and his family began making hats and finally came up with the Tilley hat. Word of mouth spread and people began showing up at his house to purchase these hats. With the success of the hats, Tilley wanted to have proper sailing shorts. He began his quest for the right material to manufacture the shorts.
