A Classic Tripod,

I owned one of these in the early 1970s and they continue in production unchanged today. I don't know the details, but there may have been ownership changes, but I think the tripod has remained the same. This was a solid, functional tripod, with only two small flaws. The center post slid in a paper sleeve that pulled loose on mine. Also, the material on the head was not the highest quality. Still, one could easily modify these. Overall, I like it well enough to consider buying one for my girlfriend for her birthday. BTW, the tripods I use are a CF Gitzo with Acratech head and a Manfrotto with Foba Superball, so I'm fairly fussy about tripods.

This tripod is EXCELLENT! It's an old standby, of course - but some things are just a classic!I needed a heavy tripod to do indoor shots - mainly for product photography. This is not a tripod to take hiking with you like those little carbon-fiber models. Believe me, you DO NOT want to lug this thing very far from the car. However, if you really need a heavy-weight tripod - this is the one for you. Even though I feel this tripod is best for indoor use, I'm not discounting it for outdoor shoots. I think it makes a perfect backup tripod for outdoor shoots - in case there's a little wind. I have one of those sandbag trays and attach it to add even more weight to the bottom of this tripod - just to keep things from being too top-heavy. This tripod is extremely sturdy. It's all aluminum - its easy to setup. Since you have to screw in all the levers and knobs, it does take a couple of minutes to set up - so that's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 (regarding ease of use). There are many other tripods that are faster and easier to set up. The product description does not mention that it INCLUDES a very nice carrying case. The carrying case has enough extra room to hold my sand bag tray - which is a triangular piece of cloth with velcro straps - so it folds to be compact. In addition, the carrying case has an external zippered compartment that holds the levers in little elastic loops.

This tripod was first made by brothers in a machine shop, then their company was sold to Leitz (manufacturer of Leica cameras). That should give some idea of the level of quality this tripod has. This design is now about forty (40) years old and still, it makes sense. These new versions have a removeable leg that may be used as a monopod. Other than that, the design is unchanged. The various grips may be removed and stored in the center column to reduce the size of the tripod during transport. This is a very sturdy tripod that will support medium-format cameras with fairly large lenses. It's not a light, or compact unit so don't expect to carry it very far (no backpacking trips). I got a case for it and use it outdoors all the time, sometimes carrying it as much as a mile with no real complaints (though I am not a small person, so your mileage may vary). Pictures made with the camera mounted on this unit (for me) have always been sharp - that tells me the tripod does what it's meant to do - keep the camera still for making images. Considering the price, this is a lot of tripod for the money! Sturdy, professional in appearance and function, and likely to last a very long time. There are lighter, more "advanced" tripods, but this unit will serve very well!
