Wow! How addictive! They really did a great job with this game on pretty much all aspects.
The animation is really great. Though it is obviously computer generated graphics, it looks like the same stop motion models in the movie. It really makes you feel like you are in the movie. There is one level where the scenery is completely black and white. This totally reminds me of something out of an Edward Gorey book (a big influence of Tim Burton). It was an awesome level to play. The story is really creative and cute. Before playing the game, my expectations weren't that high. I was a little if-ey on the fact that the whole game was Oogy getting revenge. I was expecting it to be a bit of a sellout, unoriginal and cheesy. However, they did a great job with the storyline. The writers for the game stayed so true to the `feel' of the movie. They totally captured the same essence. Basically, Jack leaves Halloween Town for a while and when he comes back the town is abandoned. It turns out that when he was gone, Lock, Shock and Barrel helped revive Oogy. Oogy then developes a plan to take over all the holidays. It is up to Jack to stop him from messing up all of the holidays, armed pretty much only with his Soul Robber (a weapon that Dr Feinkelstein gave him). The Soul Robber is fun but a tad disappointing. I feel like there was little skill and planning involved in using it. I think there could have been more combinations and stuff. I found little use for the pumpkin Jack and Santa Jack aside from burning barricades and getting ghosts out of barrels. I wish there were more things I could have done with them. Not only do you kill a lot of mobs etc., but there are puzzles and secret areas in the game. Viewing the movie actually does payoff as there is a bit of trivia from Corps Kid that pays you some money. I thought the camera angles and flow were really cool. The camera angels were fixed so you didn't have a lot of free reign to look around. This took some getting used to at first, but was fine once I did. The controls were pretty simple for the most part. It didn't take very long to get used to them at all. The music throughout the game is all from the movie. I love the music from the movie so naturally I love hearing it in the game, but you do hear it repetitively while playing, so it will get stuck in your head when you're not playing it. Just like the movie, singing plays a large role in the game. In fact, it even plays a role while fighting. If you collect enough musical notes while fighting a boss, then you go into this sort of bonus fighting mode. The voice acting was superb as well. They got several of the original voice actors from the movie; and the ones that were not from the movie sound very close to the originals. I think this is a great game for fans of the movie to get. It stays very true to the movie and just feels like a continuation of it. You really get the feeling you are in Halloween town fighting as Jack. The game does get a bit redundant at times, but overall it's pretty awesome.

POSSIBLY THE SLEEPER GAME OF 2005!,

This review is from: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge (Playstation 2) (Video Game)
I had heard a rumor that this game was coming out. It's a good thing, because I might have completely missed it. It wasn't in a single advert from the major electronic stores; which is a shocker, because it is a Disney game.
Or is it? Tim Burton seems to be a black sheep; a dark spirit in the brightly lit world of Walt Disney, with his dark tales of corpses and skeletons and evil spirits wrapped in burlap... But let's get things straight about Walt Disney. Walt was the brains behind Pirates of the Carribbean, and oversaw plans for the Haunted Mansion. There are themes in those rides that aren't quite kiddy-friendly. Some of them are quite morbid. Which goes hand and hand with Tim Burton. This game is like that. Released for the Japanese market LAST YEAR, this game was a huge seller in a nation that appreciated the sweet little stop motion movie; that most American audiences couldn't quite get. It infuriates me that Nightmare is considered to only be adored by the gothic "Hot Topic" crowd. It's just like so many instances of people writing reviews that apparently haven't seen the movie. The game is so stunning and rich, it's literally like stepping in and controlling the movie. You play as Jack, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who, after another slightly disappointing Halloween, decides to go out on a voyage to look for new chills and thrills. Along for the ride he takes a new invention, the Soul Robber, a whip-like weapon that smacks enemies down to size. BAD MISTAKE. In his absence, the mischevious trick or treaters Lock, Shock, and Barrel resurrect the nefarious sack of bugs Oogie Boogie, and he takes over Halloween Town, threating to spread his horrifying shadow across all Holiday worlds as well as our world. Jack has many items at his disposal to take his town back. While defeating enemies, he can collect pumpkin coins and buy upgrades to his weaponry. Along the way, he'll also pick up two other personas, the fire breathing Pumpkin King and Santa Jack, with his bewitched presents. Even saving as you go is made fun, with the stacked Mr Hydes. Replenishing your health meter is easy; the magical fountain in the center of town does the trick. You even get a bottle to fill, and the opportunity to create more bottles. One odd feature is the "Dance" mode. As you fight bosses, musical notes will appear. After collecting so many, you engage the boss in a dance, by pressing the correct symbol buttons. This is a bit tricky. It's the first game I've played like this, but I'll probably get the hang of it sooner or later. This is a great, visually stunning game. I liked the fact that quite a few of the original voice talents came back to give life to their computer counterparts. Original music is back, with new lyrics to go along with the game. This is not a rent game. This is a buy and get lost in game. Five stars. I would have given it more if I could have.

This review is from: Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge (Playstation 2) (Video Game)
(Review is based on the first few levels)
If you haven't watched the movie in a while, you may want to before you start playing "Oogie's Revenge"- The story begins one year after the events in the film- well- technically 10 months since the events in the movie end on Christmas Eve, but technicallities aside- The residents of Halloween Town are celebrating another Halloween, claiming it to be, yet again, the best yet, but Jack Skellington feels like there's still something missing. He seeks out help from Dr. Finkelstein, who lets Jack have his new invention the "Soul Robber"- okay- sounds a little evil- even a little sacriligeous- but in actuallity it's a green slime looking thing that wraps around Jacks wrist and can reach out and bash the living crap out of enemies, and as the game progresses you can upgrade it, along with two other costumes that each possess their own special powers: Pumpkin King: Fire blowing abilities, and Santa Jack:P the ability to throw presents that can do a number of things to enemies. A month later, after trying the Soul Robber out, Jack returns to find that Lock, SHock, and Barrel have sewn Oogie Boogie back together, Bugs and all, and he has taken over Halloween Town. To make matters worse the town's residents, trying to get their Pumpkin King back, set out Monster and Ghosts and tons of Booby traps to impress Jack, but to only have the creations and traps turn against them, so it's up to Jack to save Sally and not Only the residents of Halloween Town, but the residents of Other Holidays which Oogie has decided to take over. For those of us who watch the movie religiously, there are some rewards to having the watched the film repeatedly (actually, in one part of the game, Jack is required to answer 10 questions about Halloween Town, don't answer enough right and you'll have to start all over again- and the question sren't always the same- sample question I've encountered: What Color is the Mayor's Name Tag? What Shape is Jack's Doorbell? What Color is Sally's Hair? How Many bolts does Dr Finkelstein have on his head? as well as questions that require you to know the difference between Lock, Shcok, and Barrel- Some of the movies voices have returned to reprise their roles, including Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon)andOogie Boogie (Ken Page), Dr. Finklestein's voice is obviously different (William Hickey, the original voice, died in 1997) while the rest of the cast either blends in very well, or is just plain obviously not the original voice. Although at times, especially in the introduction to the game, the music is original music composed for the film, the rest of the songs are adapted to the game from Danny Elfman's Unbelieable original score and Music, some songs do have new lyrics to fit in with the game, and all the songs have been rerecorded with the new cast. The gameplay itself varies throughout, everything from RPG, to Strategy, to the boss rounds which, at points, are like Dance Dance Revelution and Britney's Dance Beat. The Characters and Backgrounds are amazing and allow much more freedom of exploration than the Halloween Town Level in Kingdom Hearts (some of the Game Play is similiar at times) and the character movements are very smooth, and the graphics are top notch. Instead of boring tutorials, all the new moves and abilities are described in the in game menu, as well as descriptions of special moves, bios and descriptions of characters that you have encountered and more. Best of all, if you miss a movie along the way, you can return to Jack's house and watch EVERY cut scene, as well as listen to every song played so far in the game, view your ratings on past levels, and there's even a figure shelf where you can zoom in and rotate different statues of characters throughout the game (statues are earned from a straight A level- but don't worry- every level can be replayed to get better points) The only downside to the game is that the camera is pretty much locked, which can be annoying in some parts of the game (at one point you need Zero's help to sniff out the Hanging Tree's hangmen, but without moving the camera, you sometimes have to guess where he is, but other than that the game play is pretty good. With three skill levels, hidden rooms, secret levels, as well as secret items to collect throughout the game, this should keep you busy for hours, even days, and should help fill in that space between viewing of Nightmare before Christmas,a dn should help smooth out the wait for Corpse Bride to come to DVD-

Based on the Tim Burton film of the same name, this game `stars' the pumpkin king, Jack Skellington as the main character. Jack has to wend his way through Halloween Town and the outlying areas, fighting monsters and solving puzzles as he goes. His mission is to save the town from his old nemesis Oogie Boogie and to restore order. There are three levels of difficulty, easy, normal and nightmare as well as many levels and side quests within the game. Even the easy level has some difficult areas though; not so much with the battles but more with solving some of the puzzles. Knowledge of the film is useful to complete the quiz with Corpse Kid as the questions directly relate to the movie. You can do this quiz as often as you like and receive various rewards for completing it depending on the score. After each section you receive a grade for various activities and you are then given an option of proceeding to the next level or trying to improve your grades on the level you've just completed.
Lots of the favourite film characters feature, such as Sally, the Mayor, Zero, Vampire brothers, Clown and so on. Of course Oogie Boogie has Lock, Shock and Barrel helping him and Jack has various `boss' battles with that nightmare trio. As the game progresses, Jack receives other costumes and skills. You can flame throw with Jack as the Pumpkin King or throw exploding parcels as Sandy Claws Jack. The graphics in this game are excellent as is the sound quality. Music and voices from the film are used adding to the enjoyment. This is a good quality game; not the most difficult or taxing but huge fun nonetheless. Any fan of the film should have a great time with this. Highly recommended.

You might think that because of "Oogie's Revenge," that this is a sequel to the movie, just as a game. It's like a video game of the movie, and they are very close to each other. While it's pretty fun to play whenever, it may take a while to beat it. Jack Skellington's weapon is the soul robber which defeats all of the monsters and stuff with more than one move. It is somewhat involved, but not as involved as some other video games I've played recently. The "Halloween" song from the movie usually only plays when you're fighting and it's a little different. Personally, I think it's most fun when you fight bosses. The game starts in Halloweentown, and goes from there to levels such as hidden places, the graveyard, a burial chamber in the graveyard, and several other levels. When you beat a level, the game shows your accuracy and it is possible to earn prizes if you get an "A." The gameplay is not quite like it's easy and then it's hard and then it's easy again. It changes a lot depending on which level you're on. Overall, this game is pretty fun to play. Like I said, it's just like the movie only as a video game with involved things and familiar voices, and it's NOT a sequel. I think it was even delayed before too. It's worth buying for the graphics and if you have always been a fan of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" like I have, and just because it's cool. Enjoy!

In this game Oogie has returned and Lock shock and Barrel are on the Prowl.
Good points Fixed camera angles so you don't have free control over view Fast Paced(No waiting 3 levels for plot to unfold Same voice cast Old Charachters from movie Old foes Like Lock Shock Barrel and Oogie Bad Points Pumpkin Jack and Sandy Claws not well incorporated Needs more combinations with soul robber Boss Tips Lock #1 and Shock #1 Use soul robber to swing around an enemy and damage all surrounding damage destroying maximum ammount of enemies Lock #2 just chase after lock and do damage to him Shock #2 Stay in the alcoves or on the ledges until the balls pass somtimes she sends two at a time Barrel Work himinto a corner and do all the damage you want Oogie Since the dance mode song is easy one time in dance mode takes care of this boss Dr Finkelstein Dance mode doesn't have much effect on Finkelstein so just get his brain in his head as fast as you can Giant spider Hit its butt and get as many little spiders as you can Wait for it to jump at you to get a good angle. Personal Review Best game I've ever played . everything is true to the movie including the town square Lock Shock and barrels songis the same tune with new lyrics every tim Burton fan should own this game

If you are a Nightmare Before X-Mas fan (like me), then you will love The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogies Revenge.
The plot is that Oogie Boogie kidnaps the holiday icons (Easter Bunny, Saint Nick etc), and it is up to Jack Skellington to stop him. Through-out the game, you will have to fight numerous enemies, such as ghosts or skeltons. You also will also have to fight semi-major movie characters, such as Lock, Shock and Barrel. The game graphics are pretty decent, and the music is almost all from the original 1993 movie. Most of the original voices, like Chris Sarandon, return for the game.

So my boyfriend got me this game for Christmas since I'm a tad obsessed with The Nightmare Before Christmas. It takes a bit to get used to the controls but it doesn't not disappoint in the least for how it plays. You get a lot of different ways to earn points to get scores at the end of each level (kind of like Devil May Cry except Nightmare). All in all I am pleased with this game, no real complaints on anything.
