Book Description

November 26, 2002
Tim McGraw's numbers speak for themselves: He has sold nearly twenty-five million albums, had twenty-one Top Ten singles (seventeen #1s), won The Country Music Association's Album of the Year Award twice, is a two-time Academy of Country Music Awards Male Vocalist of the Year, and has had five multi-platinum recordings. He's also a stellar superstar -- this son of Tug McGraw, who's also married to pop star Faith Hill, is seldom off the celebrity pages.

Tim McGraw's new record comes out in November 2002, and this stunningly illustrated book -- filled with never-before-seen photographs and extracts from his musician's journals -- explains the whole process, from the songwriting to the recording to the performances on tour. Published in time to coincide with both the new album and an NBC fall special, Tim McGraw and his Dancehall Doctors reveal just what it takes to make a record from scratch, and just what life is like for the biggest country star in America.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Country music sensation and CMA Entertainer of the Year McGraw goes multimedia with the publication of a pictorial diary about the making of his album Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors. To hear the singer and country music stalwarts tell it, McGraw broke all the rules on his latest outing: rather than record in Nashville with technically brilliant session players (par for the country music course), McGraw decided to have his buddies from his road band, the Dancehall Doctors, back him in an upstate New York farmhouse-cum-studio. From the project's initial planning and reception to its ultimate realization, this volume presents a view of McGraw and his band that's as slick and upbeat as the best PR material. McGraw loves and respects his long-time band members (they're the "guys who knew you when you were borrowing money from them," he says affectionately); and they, in turn, seem deeply fond and admiring of him. In first-person snippets that dot the text, musicians, producers, engineers and techies wax poetic about McGraw's artistic integrity, his intuitiveness, his desire to please fans, his ability to pick songs (he doesn't write his own) and his refusal to do easy hits-even how much women appreciate his posterior. There are basic biographical snippets-Tim dropped out of college, taught himself how to play guitar and then moved to Nashville; even when he couldn't pay the heating bills, his friends knew he'd become a star-and lots of pictures of McGraw and friends, as well as reasonably interesting discussions about making the album itself, which will be released simultaneously. Real fans will embrace this volume, as long as they're not looking for real insight: this is as feel-good as it comes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tim McGraw The Greatest Male Country Artist I Know, January 13, 2003
By
Becki Daugherty (Morgantown, KY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors: This Is Ours (Hardcover)
Well The first time I read Tim's Book I was at Barns & Noble. I picked the book up and started reading it. I didn't even get through the first chapter before I decided that I had to have this book. Unfortuanatly I didn't have enough Money to get it so I told my parents that I wanted it for Christmas. I was sure that my dad would get it for me but needless to say he didn't. It didn't think I had until I opened my last gift Christmas morning form my brother and his fiance. There it was on top of a pale yellow sweater. I was so excited! As soon as I got ready to go to my grandmother's house for Christmas dinner I sat down and started reading it while waiting on my parents to get ready.

The book was so great that I finished it in three days. It told all about his life as a singer as well as his band. The main thing that I liked was how he kept saying that his style and ways of creating his music is different from anyone elses. I have never heard of an artist turn down a song for them but suggest it for another artist. I just think that is awesome of him. It shows that he's not all about him. Yeah he wants to make good music for all his fans but it has to be something that he would listen to too.

Another thing I liked about the book was the part that he talked about recording his new album. It was really great how he created the gift boxes for all the guys in the band. He just wanted them to feel comfortable away from home. And all the pictures they have of them recording up there shows that it was hard work but they still had fun. I don't know it was just a great book and I would recommend it to anyone to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Look At Tim McGraw, His Band, and Their New CD, December 11, 2002
This review is from: Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors: This Is Ours (Hardcover)
This is a great book about country singer Tim McGraw, his band: the Dancehall Doctors, and how their new CD came together.

Throughout the book there are many picture of Tim and his band; both from in the studio, and from on the road over the past several years. There are also a lot of quotes and stories told by Tim, his band members, and by other people involved in making his albums and his live shows.

The books starts out by telling why Tim decided to record this album with his band, instead of the studio musicians that play on most country albums. There are also pages on each of his band members, who have all been with him for many years. They tell how they met Tim and how they came to work with him, and how they became involved with music. Also the book tells where they decided to record the CD, and what it was like making the record.

Before I read the book I thought it might include a lot of information that I probably already knew. However, as I was reading it, I found that it included a lot of new pictures, and a lot of stories about recording the new CD that I had not read anywhere else. As a McGraw fan for many years I really enjoyed this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LIKE IT, I LOVE IT!, December 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors: This Is Ours (Hardcover)
I just love This is OURS! Tim really is such a humble entertainer and it is so nice to read what feels a little at times like a diary... or a personal note from Tim. I totally love all the pictures... there are truly some awesome ones in there that are great just for browsing. However, when I received mine - I was totally absorbed in the reading. I did not even look ahead at pictures (didn't want to spoil any of the moments prior to reading what accompanied it all... I have been a fan of Tim from the beginning, but I just LOVED learning more and more about the DHDs and hearing people thoughts through the process. It has a real intimate feel to me... TRUE TIM fans must have this book... and anyone else should have one to learn more about this extraordinary entertainer. He is such a humble man yet a really smart business man. He is not too insecure to share the enormous spotlight with his friends - his extension of his family - his band!
