Her finest work,
By
This review is from: Tim (Mass Market Paperback)
Colleen McCulloch has written many books but I consider this, a very early work, to be her finest. It is a simple story of unconventional love, beautifully told. The characters are very strongly drawn, and it is easy to identify with the feelings of Mary Horton as she comes to grips with her love for a young man so totally unlike her. It is a topic which could so easily have led to a different and tasteless result - instead it is a truly lovely book.

As a person who adores both Harry Potter and Salman Rushdie, this is one of my all-time favorite books. I have read this book at least 8 times in the past few years, and I have lent it to many a friend and loved one. The story is engrossing, the characters are complex and endearing, and McCullough's writing is magical. As a writer and an editor, this is a story I appreciate every time I read it.

I don't like typical romance novels. I found in "Tim" an unconventional, simplistic and beautiful love story. After the first few chapters I was mesmerized by Mary and Tim and started to watch them fall in love. I shed many a tear reading this book and plan to reread it many times to enjoy another good cry.

Not quite believable, but... still lovely,

Not your typical gooey love story... but cute nonetheless. This book teaches us that beauty really is only skin deep... a cliche, I know, but by the time you finish this book, you'll wish everyone thought like Tim. He is one of the most likable characters ever, so simple-minded, yet so insightful. This book also has something important to say about the power that the opinions of others can have over us. I loved this book and it changed my life forever... even though the whole time I was reading it I found myself thinking, "Loosen up, Mary!"

A beautiful love story!!,

If you love the book DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE!!!! If you have seen the movie, read the book. This story goes where romance novels have never been before, and comes out shining. The charcaters are loveable - especially Tim - though the 'incident' in the first chapter or so is recommended to be skipped over. Wonderfully written and beautifully unpredictable. This book will never grow old in a romantics heart.

I ordered the book because after learning there was a book, the movie simply wasn't good enough. The book filled in all the blanks that the naive movie left out. I would highly recommend the book its a page turner and will make you want to read it again.

A different kind of love story,

I decided to read this book after watching the movie Mary & Tim. It all started when I looking for a particular song and stumbled upon a music video for Mary & Tim. After watching it I immediately set out to find the movie. I came across the original with a very young, a very fine looking Mel Gibson and watched it. I enjoyed all but the last 10 to 15 minutes because it didn't seem quite right. Anyway, after searching for a day , I found Mary & Tim and watched it. This version is an adaptation of the original movie not the book but I loved it none the less. After watching it several times, I decided to read the book. The story is beautifully touching, everything that Tim had to endure from the likes of his coworkers. The love and kindness showed to him by his family and others. Tim coming into Mary's life that not only changing her but allowing Tim to explore life beyond what he had been living. So it isn't a big surprise that he fell in love with her. Tim's beauty drew Mary to him but his purity of heart softened her harden nature allowing her to love him. His beauty, age and mental limitations were issues that Mary, with the help of John, allowed her to overcome so that she could take the next step. The ending of the book was sad but realistic. Tim's sister who love and adores him becomes spiteful (mostly due to the influence of her husband) never to have anything to do with Tim after their mother's death. The knife accident left us no romantic illusion that thing were going to be easy for Tim and Mary. The original movie did good job following the book but the way the ending was changed in the movie just didn't work for me.

Tim was quite shocking when written, but it is worth reading over and over again. Our ideas about suitable marriages need to be continuously revised.

This has been one of my all-time favorite books. Even more than "Thorn Birds". I never pictured Mel Gibson, but hey, I'm not complaining! This story touched me in a way few have. I even wrote to Colleen McCullough, something I've never done and probably never will again, with an author. (no, she didn't write back!) "Tim" will grip your heart and emotions like few characters have, touching a resonanting note in all of us. Excellent read.
