5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, August 13, 2008
This review is from: Tim Sale: Black And White - Revised And Expanded (Hardcover)
You need something cool on the coffee table, right? And well, that Madonna "Sex" book is kinda dated and has started drawing odd stares from visitors. Well, replace it with something that's real - Tim Sale: Black and White - Revised and Expanded. Probably the most influential illustrator working today, Tim Sale brings a keen sense of design right alongside superior draughtmanship and combines them to make stunning pictures. Yes, some of them have appeared in comic books. And some on television. But don't turn your nose up at that. This is serious art made by a committed artist. Don't miss out.

This is one of the best books I've come across because it's a lengthy, insightful & honest interview into Sale's career, dislike's, influences, & experiences in the industry. Plus his amazing art from his early days to his current endeavors is another added bonus. If you like illustration this is a no brainer & worthy purchase for your bookshelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Selection of Sale's Body of Work, August 12, 2009
This review is from: Tim Sale: Black And White - Revised And Expanded (Hardcover)
Image Comics has, in recent years, been publishing a series of quality art books by a number of talented artists - including Frank Cho, Greg Horn, J. M. Linsner, and Brian Bolland, and Top Cow, one of Image's imprints, has been publishing books on the art of Marc Silvestri, Witchblade, The Darkness, David Finch, etc. Add Tim Sale: Black and White (hereafter, I'll refer to it as B&W) to that list of quality books.

Tim Sale, you might recall, is the artist behind a number of great miniseries for DC and Marvel (on which he collaborated with Jeph Loeb, who contributes to the book) - Batman: The Long Halloween, Superman for All Seasons, Spider-Man: Blue, Hulk: Gray, and others. Loeb is largely a pen-and-ink stylist, a master of moody chiaroscuro and caricature. You get plenty of both in this book, along with a lot of sketches, a long (and I mean looooong) interview with the man himself which makes for interesting reading, and even a gallery of his color work, including the paintings which he did for Heroes (I've never seen the show, so these didn't really make a big splash with me...).

What sets Sale apart from other artists is the simplicity of his style - in this, he is perhaps more like a Mike Mignola than anyone else. His figures are drawn for an immediate impact and recognition. There really is no subtlety there - indeed, some of his drawings are so uncomplicated that you wonder if you couldn't draw this stuff yourself - but in other drawings the level of detail and the sheer genius of composition will leave you absolutely stunned.

The book itself, like all of the Image art books, is well printed, on good quality paper, and has a sturdy hardcover binding. The only real drawback to this book is that there are some typos in the text - a common problem in almost every book you buy nowadays. For those interested in Tim Sale or in comic art in general, you can't go wrong. Highly recommended for any comic book fan with an appreciation for art.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good revised and expanded and oversized edition, July 9, 2008

I already owned the Active Images first edition hc.
This is bigger in trim format, larger in contents (Heroes, Catwoman pieces of art and so on...) and it's all about this atypical great (if you love him) artist. 4 stars instead of 5 only because respect to the first edition the aditional content are not a lot. But if you buy it for the first time, this goes for 5 full stars in my opinion (a lot of sketches and pinups, and useful notes and informations).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great depth in terms of details and art, December 17, 2008
This review is from: Tim Sale: Black And White - Revised And Expanded (Hardcover)
Length:: 0:18 Mins

I only got to know Tim Sale through the paintings he did for Heroes, the TV series. The paintings were cool, so is this book.

This is a thick hardcover book without a dust jacket. There are 272 pages, mostly printed in black and white, with the last few pages devoted to some coloured pieces.

The book is written by Richard Starkings in a question and answer format throughout. It explores the life of Tim Sale, his inspiration, the many projects he has done so far, how he got to provide artwork for Heroes and other interesting stuff. The chapters are categorized primarily by his projects. There's quite a lot to read.

There are lots of sketches, comic panels, commissions and art done for fans at comic-con, etc. He dislike Johnny Depp but still drew Jack Sparrow for a fan. Most of his finished inks aren't coloured. Even the paintings that were used on Heroes were coloured by Dave Stewart - I didn't know that!

My first impression when I first flipped through the book was,"Hey, it's quite worth the money." That's probably because of the savings when printing without colour.

But hey, it's really pretty worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-have for Comic Fans, October 13, 2008

This review is from: Tim Sale: Black And White - Revised And Expanded (Hardcover)
This book follows comic artist Tim Sale's career from his early days as an amateur illustrator to his work on the current hit series Hereos. Tim talks about how his career started and how he got to where he is today. This book is filled with artwork from his many projects including his popular Batman works. It's a huge book that will look great displayed on a coffee table, and it is well worth the cover price. I recommend this not only to fans of Tim Sale, but to comic fans in general. You won't be disappointed with this purchase.

This review is from: Tim Sale: Black And White - Revised And Expanded (Hardcover)
If you are a fan of Tim Sale, of comics, of Heroes.....this book is a must. An intimate and informative look at one of the great illustrators of our time. The book is full of sketches, finished drawings, comic pages, covers, commissions, and an all new section of art colored by master colorist Dave Stewart.....not to mention a wonderfully candid interview with Tim by longtime friend and collaborator, Richard Starkings. Beautifully designed and presented in an over-sized hardcover format. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth your time and money., August 13, 2008
This review is from: Tim Sale: Black And White - Revised And Expanded (Hardcover)
One comes to a book like this for the art, and the gorgeous black and white and color work between the oversized covers of Tim Sale: Black and White - Revised and Expanded delivers.

Mr. Sale, whose profile has been lifted by his work on NBC's "Heroes," is probably best known for his work with Jeph Loeb on comic's big guns such as Batman, Superman and Spider-Man. Fans of Mr. Sale's work on those charcters will find more than their money's worth of his iconic take on those characters as well as other comic heroes such as Daredevil, Captain America and Mr. Sale's favorite, the Hulk. Those who only know Mr. Sale for his work on those characters, however, are in for a treat as the book is populated with drop dead gorgeous women. Mr. Sale's women run the gamut from the girl next door to a dangerous dame straight out of film noir, but they all have one thing in common; they are filled with a sense of life and spirit that transcends the page and communicates a genuine love and a respect for women.

If you can bear to tear yourself away from Mr. Sale's beautiful images, you will notice that words populate the pages of this book as well. After you have enjoyed the art for a few days, do yourself a favor and read the words. The writer, Richard Starkings, is a friend of Mr. Sale and reading this book is like sitting in on a conversation between the two of them. You will come away from this book not only with a better understanding of Mr. Sale the artist, but Mr. Sale the man as well.
