About Timbuk2
Born in a San Francisco garage and bred on the backs of messengers in the city streets, Timbuk2 still manufactures its custom bags in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District. For 20 years, the company has been building bags and accessories for urban adventurers with a simple philosophy: to create good-looking, tough-as-hell bags you can truly make your own. Timbuk2 celebrates your individuality, which is why the company invites its customers to design and create custom bags in its Bag Builder. By letting you hack its bags, the company believes it can make bags that work harder for you.

Like rice and beans, Timbuk2 keeps it simple when it comes to being pro-planet. The company makes durable bags that are built to last, so while the competition is piling up in landfills, Timbuk2 bags stay on your back and hugs you for a lifetime. Tales of Timbuk2 bags outlasting jobs, lovers, pets, and train wrecks are not uncommon. In fact, the company is so confident in its bags that it guarantees that they'll last a lifetime. In those rare cases when something bad goes down, Timbuk2 will take your bag off your hands and find it a new (loving) home through its bag recycling program.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced, Over-rated, Not functional, November 18, 2009
By
Cucumber Field (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
I own another Timbuk2 backpack (the Underground model). My experience with this old backpack has been along with Timbuk2's reputation -- sharp design, well-made, etc. But this is a bit too big for me and I wanted one with more pockets. So I gave it to my husband and bought Timbuk2 Commute Pack backpack, which is smaller-sized with more pockets.

My second Timbuk2 product did nothing but disappointing me.

* My first-day impression: This backpack is poorly designed and not functional. The front pockets are too small even for a wallet. Yeah, I can put my NY subway pass and blackberry, but what else? The lower-bottom front pocket is so flat and tight, I can't put even my lipsticks. When I carry it on my back, I feel uncomfortable, as the shoulder straps are positioned in the way that they do not stay on your shoulders. They slide to the sides as I walk, so I need to adjust the position of the bag time to time. This is definitely not suitable for hiking. Well, the product name says "Commute Pack", so the users should be limited among city folks???

* My second-day impression: Zippers get stuck every single time I open the bag, suggesting flaws in both design and craftsmanship. For some reason, the bag almost always looks weirdly crushed (or deflated) in the middle where a useless carrying handle is placed, even when the backpack is relatively full. I'm starting to feel Timbuk2 may be the brand that is totally over-rated by the fashion-minded (but not necessarily function-minded) crowd???

* My third-day impression: Gosh, I could have done better even with a $15 kid's backpack from the clearance sale wagons in JCPenny. Am I a total idiot or what to pay $100+ for this mediocre product?

After using this backpack for a month or so, I find it difficult to comment anything positive.

Some (minor) positives if I dare to note: I bought "brown" and the color is very nice. The material is also strong and high-quality. (It's not at all a cheapy feel or look.) The internal pocket to place a notebook computer is soft and deep, big enough for protecting my 10-inch ASUS Netbook, just right for 15-inch notebook. But again, none of these positives are "Big Deal" from a practical standpoint.

Here's my conclusion: DO NOT BUY. IT'S WASTE OF YOUR MONEY. Basically you pay for the brand, not for the quality.

(I plan to contact the company because the zipper problem persists and drives me crazy. I may update with the results.)
