Product Description

The older brother of our original Wingman, this updated Wingman has outgrown hostels. Its sleek new styling works downtown or way out of town, but its tuck-away backpack straps are still there when you need them. A time-tested traveler, the Wingman's pocketing makes sense. Its large main compartment opens wide for easy packing and a bottom expandable pocket quarantines your shoes or unmentionables from the main compartment. A small front zipper pocket enables quick access to your cards, phone and passport while secure padded pockets carry up to a 17" MacBook Pro and an iPad. Like a good Wingman, this duffel is ready for anything.

Great bag, super happy with my purchase!!!
Jillian_mt
The bag itself is very light, and can be carried conveniently from any one of the 4 handles.

The shoulder strap to carry it like a message bag, however, felt very uncomfortable.

I bought this bag because I didn't want a roller since I like maneuvering on escalators with ease. I was using a laptop bag plus a small duffel to get around this. So I researched a bag that could hold my clothes PLUS my laptop, iPad, and other misc things...so I needed pockets and good organization. Timbuk2 always makes solid bags, so I knew it would be durable. I looked at Osprey Farpoint, REI has a couple of bags. TUMI are just crazy expensive. Looked at a ton, and also wanted to make sure the measurements would fit with no issues in an overhead compartment, because having my laptop and other personal items ALL in this bag, there was no way I could chance checking it in. I've had this bag for a while now and travel once a week. Have not had one issue. It will not fit on a tiny regional plane, but I rarely fly on those planes either. You just have to be aware when you hop on one of those planes. Completely recommend.

I really wanted to love this pack. It's the maximum size for RyanAir, looks to be excellent quality, and opens up like a suitcase for easy packing.

However, the shoulder straps. They were very uncomfortable - they looked like they are too closely spaced together and dig into my neck. My husband also did not care for the shoulder straps. The waist belt is not padded. The smaller Aviator pack had great shoulder straps, and a padded waist belt. I packed each pack with the same items, and the smaller pack was much more comfortable to wear. I preferred the extra room I had in the Wingman over the Aviator but I want to be able to haul it around on my back for an hour or so.

If you are going to use it with the shoulder strap then you should be fine. It has padding and looks comfortable (I didn't try it), plus you can always upgrade to another shoulder strap as it clips on.

A note about the laptop pocket; on Timbuk2's website you can enter your electronic devices to see if they will fit a particular bag. I have an Acer 15 inch laptop, and the site said that my device would fit. The video above states that it will fit a laptop up to 17 inches, but in the written description it is mentioned that it fits up to a 17 inch Macbook. These companies create their bags around Macbook sizing, and it's frustrating. I don't know what the overall size of a 17 inch Macbook is, but it was a chore getting my 15 inch Acer into the pocket due to the zippered opening being slightly shorter. I can't imagine trying to shove anything bigger through the opening. My only real criticism for an otherwise nice bag.

Piece is well made, and fits in the overhead on small regional jets such as the Canadair and the Embraer

I'm going to start by saying that I love this bag.

I'll start for those of you who are on the fence over the strap issue - I bought this bag ready to return it immediately if this was an issue for me. I'm a US size 44 jacket so I'm a bit thick through the trunk, neck, and shoulders. Fully loaded it is slightly tight but with minor adjustments to the placement and tension of the shoulder straps and the chest strap it is no problem, even less so if you have a light jacket. I think part of the issue here is that the edges of the shoulder straps are pretty firm and the straps themselves are only lightly padded but this is not a backpack, it is a suitcase that can be carried as a backpack. I did notice that this bag is actually more uncomfortable empty than full. Try it out with whatever you would normally pack before making a decision.

Pros:

-Spacious: approx 21 in height x 16 in wide x 8 in deep (2400 cubic in / 40 L), mostly square and soft sided so it can be over packed a little. The lack of an internal frame means this bag has a bit more usable space than if it had the frame.

-Lots of pockets: see the video - lots of easy access outside pockets and ways to keep dirty things away from clean things

-Lots of carry options: comes with 4 side handles, backpack straps that tuck away, and a shoulder carry strap.

Cons:

-Straps: Some find the backpack straps too narrow - I don't have this issue.

-Price: The Carbon Twill I wanted was $30 more expensive than black.

-Construction: I don't think it is waterproof like many of the messenger bags are. Also there is a slight taper to the depth of the bag from left to right that probably will cost you a few cubic inches.

Went on a three week trip overseas and this bag is really wonderful. I really wanted to buy the Tom Bihn Aeronaut, and I may end up purchasing that bag eventually, but it was a bit too expensive right now. That was the primary driving factor for choosing the Wingman. It is roomy and convenient. I was able to fit everything and souvenirs. It was easy to fly with as carry-on luggage and to go from city to city. I did not use the carry strap provided, but used the backpack option. True, the straps do cut into the neck, but I remedied that by pulling the fabric of my clothing up a bit. Other than that it was comfortable.

Because the straps were too close and chafed a bit, I can't give this bag a perfect rating. But, for the ease and price, it is totally acceptable. I may have the straps tailored for me….
