Biography

Journey was formed by Santana manager Walter “Herbie” Herbert in 1973 and found most success in the 70s with classic rock tracks including “Don’t Stop Believing”, “Separate Ways”, “Faithfully” and “Open Arms”.

Their first albums, Journey, Look Into the Future and Next, were notable for their excellent musicianship but failed to secure the success they were hoping for. So Journey made an effort to… Read more in Amazon's Journey Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply my favorite Boxed-Set by ANY band..., January 18, 2001
I have been working in radio now for well over 10 years, and over that time I have been able to accumulate more than the average number of boxed-set's by all kinds of bands...and by a long shot, Journey's 'Time Cubed' is far and away the best of the lot. If you find yourself looking for that purchase that will give you not just many hours of listening enjoyment, but YEARS and YEARS of it, run, do NOT walk to your nearest record store and pick this one up ASAP.

You've got in a nutshell pretty much everything that made Journey one of the greatest bands of the 80's. From their early years to a point where you can clearly tell when the Journey wheel hit the pavement and they literally erupted on the music scene--a place they came to dominate for many years. Take a listen to 'Just The Same Way', and early version of 'Anytime' (I have to say I am glad they never released it), 'Party's Over, The', to their later masterpieces like 'After The Fall' and 'Be Good To Yourself' not to mention a couple of live version of 'Girl Can't Help It' and 'I'll Be Alright Without You'--there just isn't an area where this album suffers. I ran through my memory, and I couldn't find a single song that deserved to be included over the choices already there--no a LOT went into this collection, and it shows. Now I realize this album runs near $40.00, but TRUST me when I tell you it is worth each & every penny (although I got mine for free...). Fantastic stuff from a Superior band. HIGHLY Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take a sentimental Journey, May 15, 2001
By Todd Orth (Rock City Review) - See all my reviews
This is a fantastic box set from one of the premier rock bands of the late 1970's and 1980's. From top to bottom, this set gives a wide choice of selections from the early days through the stadium live versions from the "Captured" album to the sentimental radio hits from "Escape" and beyond.

So why do I rate "Time^3" four stars instead of five? Well, I would have rather had the studio versions released in this box set rather than the live versions. The trend of putting live versions and b-sides on multi-dic sets dilutes what would be an otherwise superior compilation.

Not to fret though. This set is a perfect companion for those who already have the studio versions from Journey's "Greatest Hits" CD. That is four CD's with just about everything a fan could want.

5.0 out of 5 stars a pleasure for journey fans, February 6, 2000
By Charlie Harris (Edmonds, Wa USA) - See all my reviews
I started to listen to journey when I was in the fifth grade and "escape" came out. It blew me away. Then I started collecting the earlier albums.

This collection has pretty much every one of my most loved songs. One thing though, is that they include too many of the most familiar songs for a hardcore fans taste. I mean, most hardcore fans already own several of the major cds - certainly "Escape" and dont need it repeated. But I was excited to buy the collection because it included three songs which appeared in movies (only the young, ask the lonely, and "only solutions") which did not appear on any other journey albums. I really like those songs and did not have them on cd. I was surprised to learn from the book that comes with the set that "only the young" and "ask the lonely" were originally slated to be released on FRONTIERS but were pulled off at the last minute. That album would have been a blockbuster with those tracks !

I like the first disc alot, although many will probably not find the pre-Steve Journey brand of music appealing. The song "velvet curtain" is part of an alternate version of "feeling that way", which is my favorite song from INFINITY. It sounds pretty cool - too bad it gets cut off after about a minute and a half. Oh another cool thing on disc one is a track "little girl" from the soundtrack to a japanese film called "dream after dream" for which the band wrote a symphonic rock score with the help of Neil Schon's father. The track is neat ! I love it.

Disc two contains a number of tracks from the live album "Captured" and the B-side of the single "dont stop believing", called "natural thing." That song has a really catchy chorus - cool !

Disc three has a song called "liberty" which might be pretty cool but it has this weird echo effect and the sonics are really dirty. It also has a song with Jonathan Cain doing the lead vocals.

The album comes attractively packaged with a book that provides alot of information about the band and the tracks on the cds and a lot of pictures.

Basically I enjoy this collection because I am a big journey fan, although I would have preferred more alternate tracks and more stuff from the early period. Also I have some small quibbles with the song selection, and the sonics seemed kind of muddy in places. But the music just makes me feel good and reminds me of the days of youth. It comforts me when I feel down and you cant put a price tag on that.
