"Hiding" on Campus, December 27, 2007

I knew the leader of this album from Adam when I took in Bobby Hutcherson's performance at the 2007 Rosslyn, VA Jazz Festival and was incredibly impressed with his pianist, who I learned was Joe Gilman. During the break, I asked Hutcherson about Gilman. The vibist was effusive in his praise while noting that Gilman is on the faculty of the Brubeck Institute.
With respect to this disc, the incredibly intense, pounding counterpoint between Gilman and drummer Justin Brown on "Recuerdo" best exemplifies the professor's cerebral, expressive playing throughout this very fine tribute session.
