Book Description

May 29, 2001

Novelist Marion Mead invents worlds from her imagination. But what world invented her?

An eighteenth-century newspaper article about Susanna Grier -- a runaway Virginia wife and mother who abandoned an abusive husband to follow a criminal -- is Marion's latest inspiration. The story calls to her, resonating in some deep, forgotten corner of her soul. Now her research has drawn her to the sprawling Southern estate of Raymond Lord, and to a diary penned by the real-life Susanna's great-granddaughter, Pearl. But names and people Marion dreamed up for her novel-in-progress are inexplicably appearing in Pearl's century-old memoirs. A recurring history that always ends in tragedy and violence is slowly being revealed to her; a history that could well be Marion's future. A legacy of passion, betrayal and murder that haunts Raymond Lord is blurring the boundaries between past and present -- and it's leading them both down a strange path that defies the laws of time and the limits of memory.

From the acclaimed author of The Fourth World, Wilderness, and Circuit of Heaven comes a novel of superb craft and relentless invention; a remarkable story of lives, loves, and dark fates that intertwine through many incarnations.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The premise of Danvers's second novel (after Wilderness)-lovers united and reunited through the centuries-has potential, but unsympathetic characters and a sluggish narration fail to ignite proper suspense or romance. Raymond Lord, who lives on a restored Virginia plantation, is or perhaps isn't the 1990s reincarnation of both Anthony Richards, 18th-century seducer and murderer of Susanna Grier, and Frank Strickland, who in the 19th century drove Susanna's great granddaughter, Pearl, to suicide. Marion Mead, who narrates, is an aspiring writer just beginning a novel about Susanna. When Raymond offers to show her Pearl's journal, Marion goes off for a weekend on the plantation and finds herself falling for "the most beautiful man I'd ever seen." Even her increasing uneasiness about the reclusive and moody Raymond doesn't stop the love-struck but absurdly naive woman from taking her two young stepdaughters along for another gothically romantic weekend (Could Marion be Susanna? Does Raymond intend to murder them all?). Fans of historical romance may find the interwoven adventures of Susanna, Pearl and Marion diverting, but those hoping for spine-chilling suspense won't find it here.

From Library Journal

Danvers, author of the suspenseful, erotic, contemporary love story Wilderness (LJ 3/15/91), firmly establishes his place as an offbeat but exciting romance author with this latest tale. The novel combines contemporary action with the concept of individual immortality. Marion Mead, researching her latest novel, seeks information on the Grier family of 18th-century Virginia. Raymond Lord responds and offers the use of a journal belonging to a descendant of one of the Griers. Marion and Raymond are instantly attracted to each other, and the research and writing continue at a rapid pace. The novel's action is played out against the background of chapters from Marion's book, entries from the journal, and the developing relationship between Raymond and Marion. Strong undercurrents of passion and suspense combine to produce a fast-paced, well-written, and nonformulaic romance novel. Highly recommended for public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical fantasy, incredible suspense, & a touch of romance, February 15, 2003
This review is from: Time and Time Again (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was appropriately categorized by the publisher as a FANTASY novel. There was another review that referred to it as a romance - not so. Yes, there is a little romantic element to it, but it takes a back seat to the mystery, suspense, fantasy story.

This is a story about Marion Mead, a historical society librarian and part-time novelist. She comes across an old news clip from 1779 concerning a runaway wife, Susanna Grier. The clip ignited her imagination and gave her the inspiration for her next novel. Three chapters into the novel she feels blocked and can't figure out how to proceed with the story. At a whim she places an add in the New York Times book review asking that anyone with historical information pertaining to the Grier family to contact her. A handsome, mysterious Raymond Lord responds to the add. He has an old diary from a member of the family who lived some 100 years after the original news character.

What happens next is the stuff of fantasy. Believe in reincarnation? You will. Believe in ESP? You will. Are these two ill fated people, Marion & Raymond, tragic lovers through time? You'll need to find the answer to that one as you enjoy this WONDERFULLY imaginative tale. I highly recommend this book to any fantasy enthusiast.

It's a romance, of course, and I'm always a sucker for those. This book is suspenceful too, it kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn't want to put it down! I really liked this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, May 8, 2000

This review is from: Time and Time Again (Paperback)
"Circuit of Heaven" was so intellectually exciting and original that I would have taken any book by Dennis Danvers on faith. But I'm finding it very hard to believe that these two books were written by the same person. Maybe if you like Romance novels "Time and Time Again" would have some appeal. To me, it was sappy, predictable, uninteresting and unengaging. I couldn't get halfway through it. Did he really write this book?
