4.0 out of 5 stars Hilton's last novel; not quite up to his earlier classics but still worth a read, March 26, 2011

This review is from: Time and Time Again (Hardcover)
James Hilton wrote this novel, "Time and Time Again", in 1953; it was his last novel. While an interesting period piece, it is not quite up to the standards he set in his earlier classics, such as "Lost Horizons" and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips". However, it is still quite well-written and worth a read.

"Time and Time Again" is the story of a modest 20th century hero - an ordinary man in the diplomatic service. Some of the chapters are titled 'nothing much to complain about', 'run of the mill', and so on. It's a story of the heart and mind of a very human man. With scenes ranging from Paris to Connecticut, London to South America, and bright with wit and incident by a master storyteller, it mounts to a startling, but credible, climax.

If you are already an admirer of Hilton from his other works, you may find the subtler style of this work a little pedantic at first. But I found it worth the while.

(FYI: some may have found this title believing it is the time travel novel, "Time and Again", by the late, great Jack Finney. That is a wonderful book, too, and well worth locating - but this ain't it!)
