This is a doozy of an album I've had in my collection for some time now. For awhile, I considered it to be top of the top. For those of you who haven't heard of Orphanage, which is almost everyone, they are a very unique combo of black/death metal with groovy rhythms, gregorian chants, and female backup vocals. Yeah, that's right. Kinda hard to classify. Highlights for me are the beautiful harmonic vocals combined with raw, powerful, heavy music. Fans of Therion, Celestial Season, My Dying Bride, and even Theatre of Tragedy may really like Orphanage. Heavy highlight tracks are At the Mountains of Madness (best), Five Crystals, and Deceiver. But some of my favorite songs are the dark, slow gloomy songs like The Dark Side, Ancient Rhymes, and the awesome Cliffs of Moher(female solo). Orphange's first album Oblivion is also great, but this album is a step better as far as composition, and orchestration. Take a chance and buy this! At the very least you'll own a well written, unique heavy album.

As I said, this is my favorite album of all times. It has everything: unique fantastic atmosphere, strong rhythm, great melodies, gregorian choir chanting and George's throat-cancer growls. :) I have this CD for more than 6 years. I have listened to it for millions of times and I just cannot get enough of it. This one deserves not 5, but 555 stars on the scale! I plan to buy another copy of this album and keep it in a safe, just in case something bad happens to the one that is now playing in my CD player. :)This CD is an extraordinary release. A real masterpiece. A classic. Get it. You won't regret it!

As a fan of the so-called goth metal genre, I must say that I was wholly unimpressed with this purchase. It made me scared to buy any Dutch goth metal, but I later found out that Within Temptation is a really good band. Anyways, Orphange, in my mind, is a simplistic, badly produced attempt at goth metal. They pale in comparison to the kings of the genre, Tristania. The best part of goth metal is the female vocals. With Orphanage, the female vocs are pathetic compared to the likes of Vibeke Stene, Liv Kristen, and Sharon Adel. The male vocals are, of course, growled, but they aren't too good either. The songs get boring, but the lyrics are good. Final note--step down Orphanage and let the Scandinavians do goth metal.
