Editorial Reviews

I ve always hoped I would stay around long enough to get to make a record of Jerry Jeff Walker songs. He s the guy I saw at 19 and decided to try to be like. His are the first songs I learned. He is the reason we put a gypsy flag on stage. It s kind of a tribute record but not the kind of record in which I record my favorite Jerry Jeff Walker songs because I don t have favorites. We just went into a studio with another hero of mine, Don Was. We played about 30 of Walker s songs randomly, without forethought, and let the performance of the songs dictate the way the record was taking shape and which songs would make it. I could have done 30 more. My main hope is that Jerry Jeff Walker and his family will like this record, and my main reason for doing it is so I can put these songs in my set list without them technically being covers. Time As We Know It is something Jerry Jeff points out when he hears people starting to talk about what time it is... Todd Snider

5.0 out of 5 stars Who could ask for more?! April 28, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I'll preface this review with a caveat. I am an avid Todd Snider fan and a long-time admirer of Jerry Jeff Walker. That being said, this is an immensely enjoyable album! The best way to describe it is to imagine you are sitting in on a jam session, singing along and having the time of your life! A rollicking version of Vince Triple O Martin starts things off with a bang! Other stand outs are the classic Taking It As It Comes and the Caribbean flavored Sangria Wine. Mr. Snider adds his ingenious touch and sense of style to deliver these songs as his own, his love of one of his favorite artists and mentors shining through. He slows it down for the hauntingly beautiful Little Bird and thought-provoking Derby Day and delivers a raw and emotional Laying My Life on The Line. Pissing In the Wind is a fun, rowdy sing-a-long and, of course, Mr.Bojangles is a must have addition to this tribute album! Great American Taxi, a group of enormously talented musicians, provide the toe-tapping, foot-stomping accompaniment! Others lending their talent are Kix Brooks,Amy LaVere, Barefoot Kenny, Elizabeth Cook and more! Don Was, the renowned producer, did a masterful job of reigning it all in! Two words: Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Todd Snider does Jerry Jeff August 8, 2012
By Ed M

I love Todd, and Todd and I love Jerry Jeff, so this is a great tribute. Todd does a fine job and he's on target with his song choices.
I wish he had included LA Freeway, because I love that song, but that doesn't detract from my enjoyment of this effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars Redneck blues June 4, 2012

Quite amusing in an intelligent way of performing folk, and blues presentation with a witty sarcasm. Appropriate for a keg-party I believe.

5.0 out of 5 stars True work of art from a fan of JJW! December 10, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Disclaimer: I have loved Jerry Jeff Walker since I bought Great Gonzos four years ago, and listen to his music at least once a month. I also love Todd Snider's music and his style and have since shortly after finding JJW. What is the best thing that could ever happen? (Besides winning the $500M lottery) Todd Snider recording an album of JJW songs!!!! I just got this and listened to it today. And I'm going to listen to it tomorrow. And probably the next day. Some of the vocals don't stand out enough and the harmonica might have been recorded a little hot (probably recorded live with vocals, that's just Todd for you) but the production is terrific. Standouts are Railroad Lady (love that song!), Little Bird (a first time for me, but now I have to hunt down JJW version), and of course the all acoustic, only Todd Mr. Bojangles.Laying My Life On The Line was also great. Hell the whole album is great. Do yourself a favor and order this and send one to a friend because they'll love you forever for it!!!!
