It's not too often you come across authors who also involve themselves in music. There's Michael Moorcock and his involvement with Hawkwind. Mick Farren and his band The Deviants was also an author. And then there's Julian Jay Savarin and his band Julian's Treatment. To be honest, I know little of this guy. I can't seem to find much info on him, or on the books he wrote. Just that I know that he's a Dominican born author residing in England. He still continues to write books to this day. One book I'm aware of is Waiters on the Dance, mainly because he also released an album with that name under his own name roughly around the same time as the Julian's Treatment album. A Time Before This was originally released in 1970 on the Young Blood label (the Akarma CD reissue states 1972, but of course, I obviously don't believe it). It also oddly received a US release on Decca as well. This album is a long lost gem of prog and psych. The band featured Savarin on organ, and he creates some great, spacy sounds on it. Plus there's female vocals from Australian Cathy Pruden. Then there's a couple of other guys handling the usual (guitar, bass, drums, flute). The music has that rather campy late '60s feel to it throughout, sounding like music appropriate for some cheesy, campy, surrealistic sci-fi film of the time (like Barbarella with Jane Fonda). Julian's Treatment has been compared to the band The United States of America (the band with Joe Byrd and Dorothy Moskowitz), but since I hadn't heard their self-entitled 1968 offering, I'm unable to say. I can compare this band a little to the Dutch band Earth & Fire, but without Mellotron, and a more cosmic feel. Bands like Sandrose and Analogy are also frequently compared to.Read more ›
