5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest example of live Buddy!!!!, December 18, 2003
This review is from: Time Being: Amazing Buddy Rich (Audio CD)
I own well over 20 Buddy Rich cd's and this stands out as the most listened to by me. The solos are amazing. "Time Being" is in my opinion the best song on the album with the greatest drum solo I have ever heard!! Buddy is a living, breathing metronome.
I would compare the solo to a machine gun toward the end. Very aggressive drumming. My heart races when I hear the track. I would say every "real" Buddy Rich fan must own this title, and a new comer to the worldof the amazing Buddy should be introduced tthrough this cd. Long live Buddy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars World's Greatest Drummer? Could Be..., June 2, 2005
By
This review is from: Time Being: Amazing Buddy Rich (Audio CD)
When it came to technique, speed, power, and the ability to put together incredible drum solos, Buddy Rich lived up to the billing of "the world's greatest drummer." Although some other drummers were more innovative, in reality none were in his league even during the early days. In 1966, Buddy Rich beat the odds and put together a successful big band that would be his main outlet for his final 20 years. His heart began giving him trouble starting in 1983, but Rich never gave his music less than 100 percent and was still pushing himself at the end. A perfectionist who expected the same from his sidemen. This CD displays much of his talent. Puts death metal drummers to shame.

Just as everyone before me has stated, this cd rips 'n roars like crazy from beginning to end. But this is not really a new album but a compilation of tunes from three previously released cd's. The first three tunes are from "A Different Drummer"; the next four are from "Rich in London" (Live at Ronnie Scott's) and the last three selections are from "Stick It." So, if you already have these albums, it would be pointless to purchase this one.

From a purely technical standpoint no one can touch BR. I've never heard or seen anyone who can execute and drive a big band like he can. And you can hear why on this compilation.

My personal favorite is the title track, "Time Being" a superb extended tune written by Bill Holman. If you view and listen to the YuTube video of this track, Rich almost collapses from exhaustion at the end! Nevertheless, "Dancing Men" is so catchy that it continues to play in my head after listening to the whole cd. And I also like "Two Bass Hit."

Highly recommend for the kind of driving big band jazz/jazz rock you are not likely to find being performed nowadays. But just keep in mind, it is a compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars great find!, February 2, 2007
This review is from: Time Being: Amazing Buddy Rich (Audio CD)
all i knew about buddy rich was that he played the drums & used to be on the tonight show with bad hair a long time ago. I've been on a big band kick lately and saw this cd listed cheap so i thought, "the price is right, give mr. rich a try." well, wow! this is a powerhouse of a recording. I enjoyed it immensely and highly, highly recommend it. there is some music hear that is as much jazz-rock fusion as it is big band jazz, and that's fine. i consider this a permanent household item now. pure energy to be unleashed whenever a dose is needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE DANCING MEN, April 11, 2003
By
This review is from: Time Being: Amazing Buddy Rich (Audio CD)
I think that Dancing Men is the greatest song ever written. I adore its repetitive rhythm content, as well as its great major chord voicings. The high trumpet parts rock my world and I feel amazing every time I hear it. I play the tenor saxaphone, and this is my favorite tune...I get so excited whenever anyone calls it. If they don't, I often call it myself. Anyway, this CD is reallly great. Especially Dancing Men!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5-star drum solo, October 15, 2003

This review is from: Time Being: Amazing Buddy Rich (Audio CD)
Having seen Buddy Rich and his Killer Force band several times during his visit to Toronto in the 1970's and early 1980's, in my opinion, Buddy is the best and fastest speedwise self taught swing drummer during his era. Butch Miles (formerly of Count Basie) would come a close second in emulating Buddy's technique when Buddy was alive.

Listen to Time Being. This track is typical of how Buddy builds the moment to his live 5 minute drum solos. From his initial rim-shot and bass drum accented buzz snare roll to an explosive single stroke attack on every tom-tom and cymbal finishes off the set.

Of most of the records, and records to CD's of Buddy's, in my opinion this is his best drum solo.
