This review is from: A Time To...: The Best Of The Lorelei Signal 2007 (Paperback)
Disclosure: I have two stories in this book, so I'm reporting my thoughts only on a few of the other stories I really liked. Well, I liked them all, but here is my favorite from each of the Lorelei Signal issues. Four pieces are included for each of the quarterly issues. There is a mix of stories and poems. I'll back away from the poetry since I have no idea what makes for a good poem. All, I'd bet, are excellent.January-March Issue The Witch's Revenge by Barbara Davies. I love a great pickup on old folktales. In this case, the story tells what happens after the events in Hans Christian Anderson's "The Tinder Box." Gotta love the cleverness of Trudel in getting back at the greedy king who stole her tinder box. April-June Issue Harleys in Driftwood by C.A. Casey: This story is so different and original, it knocked my socks off. The magic of art. Cool. July-September Issue Ngati and the Listeners by Elizabeth Barrette: I liked this take on how minor deities might behave if they actually wandered around the world observing the human condition. (My story here titled, "A Visit to Potter's Field") October-December Issue Tempting the Fates by J. J. Fellows: I'd say this is similar to the concept of "Don't Peeve Mother Nature." Here, Lilith, the original woman in the world, gets the Fates to try out a new weaving for fun, then takes advantage of the chance to make her own fate. (My story here titled "The Delegate." Go to the Lorelei Signal website to read great stories all year round. Vote for your favorites and they'll appear in the next anthology. |
