Book Description

October 11, 2001
For generations, a love of flowers, an understanding of nature, and a knowledge of the secrets of plants has passed seamlessly from mother to daughter to granddaughter. In its deliciously entertaining text and through its beautiful photographs, A TIME TO BLOSSOM captures the essence of childhood.
Whether she is climbing an apple tree, squirming through a proper tea-party visit with an elderly neighbor, dashing to hang a May basket on a friend's door, or sitting crowded and cranky on a Sunday ride with the family, Tovah Martin's childhood memories will captivate the reader. With Richard Brown's glorious photography, A TIME TO BLOSSOM reminds us of the authors' earlier book, TASHA TUDOR'S GARDEN. The text is frank, impish, nostalgic, but never cloying or sentimental. It is a recollection of childhood with all the mischief, the mystery, and the innocence intact.
And for readers who want to enjoy their own mother and daughter flower projects, A TIME TO BLOSSOM is filled with practical instructions: How to make a hollyhock doll; weave a garland; press pansies, bake a scented geranium cake, force bulbs, dry flowers, make rose potpourri, grow a giant amaryllis, and much much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strikingly lovely!, December 20, 2001

Fully capturing a sense of childhood wide-eyed wonder, Ms. Martin shares with readers now and for years to come her passion for flowers and gardening. Complementing her fine text are photographs of strikingly lovely and beautiful women and girls - a beautiful tribute to mothers and daughters to parallel Ms. Martin's desire for readers to convey their love for blossoms to their own daughters. It's a beautiful book with a beautiful message.

My mom bought me this book when I had my own little girl. It sat on the coffee table as a showpiece, just because its a beautiful book. What I didn't realize at first was that it reads like a novel, too. Tovah Martin is apparently writing about her own childhood experiences with her mother in the garden, and she does so with eloquence. Her stories make me want to take notes of all the flowers and trees that shaped her earliest memories. She writes about them in such a way that I want them to become a part of my own life. I am now considering buying another Tovah Martin book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just lovely .., February 15, 2009
This review is from: A Time to Blossom (Hardcover)
The women of my Family have been involved in horticulture from long before me, and have passed their love of flowers from Mother to Daughter through the generations. As I have Daughters, I have done same. This book is very much a portrait of our lives. All of us have enjoyed it very much, and let it in the open for others who come to our home to enjoy, too. A very lovely book that covers the joys of the seasons and Flowers, Mothers and Daughters. Gorgeous photos.
