Editorial Reviews

Melodic Groove Heavy Rock with a distinctively progressive Metal edge. Six Minute Century is a power/prog metal band from Houston, Texas. Formed in the summer of 2004, the band has become one of the top power/prog metal bands in the area. Lead by guitarist Don LaFon (Krucible, Mystic Cross, Logan), the band, which also features John Sample on bass and Darren Davis (Outworld) on drums, fuses a mixture of power/prog metal with the groove of more southern style metal. Add to the band the soaring vocal melodies of Chuck Williams and you get a musical sound in the vein of Savatage / Dio / Kamelot, with the vocal style of Fates Warning / Dream Theater / TNT. While all members of Six Minute Century are technically proficient, the band does not fit the category of a band that tries to impress with how many notes they can play. Rather Six Minute Century prefers to write songs with melody, hooks, passion and groove that will appeal to a wider audience than many of today s progressive metal bands. Chuck Williams writes many lyrics about historical events to accompany Don LaFon s musical orchestrations. Six Minute Century s debut release, Time Capsules , brings the listener into such events as The Iraq War, The Oklahoma City bombing, and the life of the legendary Martin Luther King Jr., as well as other non historical stories. Time Capsules is set for a Spring release on Nightmare Records.

You like phat guitars? You like Tony Harnell-like vox? You like meaningful, deep lyrics about real things? You like GREAT metal? Buy Six Minute Century's debut CD "Time Capsules"!! You'll hear so many catchy riffs, the CD will have to be listened to numerous times. Songs about the Oklahoma City bombing, Martin Luther King, a conversation with one's Higher Power and vampires are but some of the subject matter.

You like to hear a guitar virtuoso, listen to "Guitar Concerto". You will hear both shredding AND playing from the gonads. There aren't a handful of players that can do both at this level.

After hearing the epic "April 19, 1995", the melody will not leave your head. After hearing the last note in "Under the Moonlight", there will be no glass left anywhere near your speakers. After hearing "Heaven's Gate", your neck will need immediate attention. After hearing the entire CD, you may have laughed, cried and headbanged separately or simultaneously.

Buy this CD and tell me if I'm wrong. It's just that great.

In trying to write a review that isn't too "gushing", I'm trying to find a weak spot on this album. I can't find one. All four members of Six Minute Century are incredibly talented musicians, and they don't sacrifice the whole of the song to spotlight their individual greatness.

Darren Davis' drumming is impeccable. John Sample shines throughout this disc. Chuck Williams is one of those special vocalists that can do the high-pitch long-note vocal acrobatics, and still communicate his lyrics soulfully. Don LaFon's riffs are powerful and his leads are scorching.

These are songs that will move you, that are fun to sing along to, that grab you and don't let go. Every song flows smoothly into moments that'll have you staring at your speakers in disbelief. Brilliant in both music and lyrics, this CD is great by any standard you wish to judge it by - it's not just "really good for a debut disc", it's a great disc that you'll want to pull out for your friends who will thank you for introducing them to an incredible band.

If it's in stock, click the buy button. If SMC comes anywhere near your town, see their live show - this is one of those rare bands that excel both in the studio and on the stage. The down side to this album - it's only 10 songs.

Have you ever closed your eyes and just enjoyed the music? That is exactly what you will do with Six Minute Century. And then once you learn the words and understand how much heart and soul is on the won't be able to refrain from singing along. This band is absolutely awesome! As a huge Queensryche fan, who is blessed with one of the most melodical voices of all time, Chuck Williams has proved himself just as good and his voice is amazing. I have seen these guys live many many times and they will kick your azz without a doubt. It is well worth whatever you pay and you will love it!!!! I will probably have to buy it again eventually cuz I will warp it :) Give SMC a chance and you will be a fan no doubt.
