5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Time to Check Out
Having read the four previous novels in this series, I am in a position to comment on the fifth. Grant Michaels has honed the art of producing page-turning mystery novels with a gay twist. There are some surprises, but Michaels principle strengths persist: believable dialog from spunky and independently-thinking characters, lush verbal paintings of the settings and...

3.0 out of 5 stars This series is always a good, fun read.
While not quite as good as previous books in the Stan Kraychick series due to too many odd-ball characters (but, this is Key West), this was still a fun, easy read. I longed for the continuation of the interesting relationship between Stan and his police detective friend/adversary from prior books. That relationship has more life in it and is more real than the...

Having read the four previous novels in this series, I am in a position to comment on the fifth. Grant Michaels has honed the art of producing page-turning mystery novels with a gay twist. There are some surprises, but Michaels principle strengths persist: believable dialog from spunky and independently-thinking characters, lush verbal paintings of the settings and actions, and for my money, the eminently likeable Stan Kraychik, although initially, he's a bit more bitter and skeptical, and for good reason--well, a sad reason. (Besides the fact that he's come to Key West, I mean!) Haven't read it all yet, and the Amazon review was here, but I can tell you that I've already bought the next in the series after this one, and it's in the pile by my easy chair.

This is the first gay mystery I've read and it was a page turner for me. I couldn't put it down. I think it is a great read.

I started this book on the plane en route to Key West and finished it while on vacation at a guest house there. It's a great book for a fun read, particularly while sitting poolside in Key West and envisioning the characters and locale. Not great literature, but a good story with vivid characters and locales. Looking forward to reading his other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grant Michaels...please write more!, June 2, 1998

I have been eagerly awaiting more titles from Grant Michaels. Whatever the flaws, his characters and dialogue whisk me along at an all-time record. Hope that he realizes how popular he is with gay readers. A summer release would be most welcome. Stan is the man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grant Michaels is fabulous! He brings Stan Krachick to life, September 23, 1997
If you love a good murder full of outrageous characters and an amateur sleuth full of sass, then Grant Michaels books are for you! Stan Kraychick has got to be my favorite would-be Nancy Drew to date. His biting sense of humor coupled with his keen eye for detail (along with his ability to stumble upon dead bodies at every turn) make him the perfect choice to solve the hilarious and complex mysteries Michaels creates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stan vacations in Key West but the killings follow, September 26, 2009

I must say after reading book after book Grant Michaels is quickly become one of my favorite mystery writers. Stan goes to Key West to get over the death of his husband but only to find himself once again in the middle of murder. I really missed the characters that appeared in all the previous books but I raise my glass to Grant for keeping me interested from page to page with the new characters. Needless to say Stan makes all the right moves in order to solve the latest series of events. I must say I was able to figure out the killer in the last couple of books but Grant shook things up and I was so wrong on this one. Have fun reading this entertaining series. I can not wait until I get the last book in. Happy reading.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not any more., February 3, 2004
This review is from: Time to Check Out: A Stan Kraychik Mystery (Stonewall Inn Mysteries) (Paperback)
This is the fifth in this Stan Kraychik series. It seems Grant Michaels has been going downhill. This issue is just boring. I won`t read the next one("Dead as a Doornail"). Enough for me. Sorry Stan. You used to be so fun...

2.0 out of 5 stars It was ok, May 14, 1998

Did not enjoy this book as much as I was expecting to, judging from the nice cover. "Boston", the main character as nicknamed by another character named Cozy Dinette, is just plain nosey and gets himself involved in a myriad of nonsensical situations - I even started to hate him - I wouldn't like to meet him. The storyline drags on, but the novel DID have a decent ending, which kept me from giving this book a lower rating. The author's writing style kept me from becoming too intrigued at any point, and I had no problem putting it down. It took me about a month to read it when I could have read it in about a week. Key West is a much nicer town I feel than this book pictures it to be as well.
