more than just a pretty cover,
This review is from: A Time to Dance (Paperback)
This is the book that made me love Karen Kingsbury's books. I had never read any of her books before, and, to be perfectly honest, the only reason I wanted to read her books was because the covers looked awesome. I was soon to be going on a trip and I needed to "re-stock" on my books so I could read in the car(yes, my family was driving). I decided to give Mrs. Kingsbury a try. After I read the back of her books I decided on A Time to Dance. It sounded like it had a good story line and wasn't like the fluffy, don't-have-to-think-just-read type book. Boy, was I in for a treat. This book forces you to think about your life in a different view. I talked so much with God while I was reading A Time to Dance. Mrs. Kingsbury does an excellent job getting you to become familiar with the characters, to the point where you hurt when they hurt and wish you could be there to give them advice and talk to them. I just finished A Moment of Weakness a few days ago and it's just as good as A Time to Dance. I really encourage you to try Karen Kingsbury. You'll be surprised how much you enjoy her work.

another wonderful novel from Kingsbury!,
By Beverly "bevreader" (Mississippi) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Time to Dance (Paperback)
I have come to expect a lot from Kingsbury's books, and this one will not disappoint anyone! John and Abbey are on the brink of divorce; their biggest remaining obstacle is telling their children. Once their daughter announces her engagement, they decide to put off telling them until the wedding is over so that her happiness will not be marred. During the ensuing months, John and Abbey continue in their emotional turmoil, but also slowly begin to develop a new understanding of each other. Unfortunately, for every emotional step forward, they suddenly take several steps backward. The highs and lows of their relationship, coupled with complications from another woman, future in-laws, and an email friend, will keep you reading until the astounding climax. Will John and Abbey ever reconcile? This is a powerful story of the healing power of God's love plus the always awesome power of prayer.

Positively Uplifting!,

This was my first Kingsbury novel. I can't even express to you how good this story was. The characters were so well written, I felt like I was actually in their lives hearing and seeing everything in the story. John and Abbey Reynolds fell in love. They got married. They had kids. They lost each other somewhere in the middle of all the growing years. John had his thoughts and reasons, and Abbey had hers. This story shows the power of God and how He does work miracles. This may seem like a tragic story of divorce, but it is also a wonderful story about John and Abbey, and their love for each other. I could not put this novel down. The ending was so incredible, they.......can't tell you, read for yourself. I know alot of people that have gone threw the same pains as John and Abbey. This hits home for alot of couples. The strength you will feel not only from John and Abbey, their kids and family but the strength from God. You must read this. This is also good for anyone who is having marriage problems. This is very inspiring and will make you think. Kudo's to Karen Kingsbury. Make sure you have your box of tissue's ready, you will need it.

This was, hands down, the best book I have ever read! I love the way John and Abby's life is so real. The flashbacks to their past is very touching and makes you realize how possible this is for everyone's relationships. Karen Kingsburg is a great author which is shown in many of her books. Enjoy!

It's extremely hard for me to find a book that really catches my attention and that I can focus on. I have never heard of this book before when I went to the library but I saw it on the shelf, read the cover, and decided to read it. Well let me tell you, I read the whole entire book in one day and I loved it! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

A Time To Dance,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Time to Dance (Paperback)
Karen Kingsbury is a favorite author of mine, and this book was by far my most favorite!! It reminds us to take time out in our marriages for the spouse, and most importantly, to put God first in our lives. Hence, everything will follow suit. I couldn't put this book down... and her message spoke to my heart.

An encouraging read,
This review is from: A Time to Dance (Paperback)
I have read almost all of Karen Kingsbury's books, and this one is by far my favorite. It is a story about an average family going through a very difficult season. I kept recognizing myself in the pages without feeling preached to. Kingsbury is to-the-point about the effects of daily struggles on this couple's relationship, and is particularly gifted at letting the reader see how God might be working in their own lives, as she depicts Him working in the lives of these characters. The end is a little predictable, but after this near-miss tale, you'll be glad it is. It will leave you with a firmer committment to your own relationships, and wiser to the things that bit by bit, tear them apart. Kingsbury has woven yet another memorable tale depicting God's abounding grace to those who seek Him and His healing touch available to those who will humbly ask.

A Time to Dance and a Time to Remember!,
By Shelby Watson (Wilmington, DE USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Time to Dance (Paperback)
"A Time to Dance" was one of the most touching books that I have ever read. This is the story of a once-happily married couple, now married in name only. Yet by reading their struggle, it can take us back to those sweet days when we first fell in love with our husbands and remind us that those days don't have to end! How love can be strengthened through the tough times and come out even stronger and deeper than in the days when love was new. This is a book that you will want to keep on your shelf after reading it, so that you can go back and reflect on it from time to time. Whether you are single, happily married or unhappily married, you will enjoy this book and the message that it shares. Allow yourself some "Time to Dance"!.

Exhausting!,
By Tempost (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Time to Dance (Paperback)
I found this book emotionally exhausting. This is a book about a marriage on the rocks. The couple has decided to split but each looks back on the past to remember how their marriage was. I don't think I'm spoiling anything here, we know they will resolve things in the end, right? I just hate that it takes until virtually the last page to happen.
We go through the wringer with John and Abby and we get to see both sides of the story, but I needed a bit more than a neat apology at the end to satisfy me. I'm also not pleased that these Christian characters had no Christian friends to support them or talk to. I know the main point of the story was to show that when a couple steps away from God, then their marriage can suffer, but this couple had two active children who were obviously still attending and involved in church. Where were the church people? And when they stopped attending church, where were their friends? However, I will say that Kingsbury is an excellent writer. She keeps you invested in the storyline and characters. But this was like dieting and exercising for a month straight and losing 2 pounds...you just wanted a little more for your effort.

More than just a story,
By
This review is from: A Time to Dance (Women of Faith Fiction) (Mass Market Paperback)
"A Time To Dance" was my first experience with Kingsbury, but my curiosity for more is piqued. This book touched me in many real-life, practical ways. Am I taking my husband for granted? Am I listening to the still, small voice of God when He speaks to my spirit? Is my heart guarded against anything which may tear my family apart? I get weary when "Christian" fiction is only Christian in that the characters attend church, don't drink much and don't have sex before marriage. Those things should not be relegated to the "Christian" shelf; by the same token, a truly Christian novel should integrate the work of God in the characters' lives in a biblical, believable way.
I was pleased with Kingsbury's writing ability. Unlike so many other authors out there today (like "Dick and Jane" author Nicholas Sparks, who, OK, didn't, but could have written Dick and Jane, but shouldn't have attempted big people stories), her sentences flow well, the book is edited well, and she's adept at using language in a common, readable way. This book will be a blessing to those who open their hearts to it, and it should be required reading for married Christians, as it's more powerful than any pre-marital counseling. |
