5.0 out of 5 stars tear jerker
I bought this book for my 14 year old, because she loves dancing and she heard about it and wanted it. I picked it up to have a look and I just cried straight through the last 2/3 of the book. 3.0 out of 5 stars an amazing story of courage...
I've read this book more than ten times, and everytime I read it, I cry, I smile, and I thank God for everything I have in my life. It is an incredible story about the courage of a young woman, the strength of a friendship, and the lessons that life teaches us. From the moment I started the first chapter, I fell in love with these two girls, and they brought me along on...

5.0 out of 5 stars tear jerker, June 21, 2001
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
I bought this book for my 14 year old, because she loves dancing and she heard about it and wanted it. I picked it up to have a look and I just cried straight through the last 2/3 of the book. I had to skim some of it (it is a teenage read), but it's really quite good. There's a nice play back and forth between best friends: one lovely girl with cancer, and another equally lovely girl without cancer. The first has a very creditable relationship with her mother and family (a big part of the cry) and the other has an absolutely awful mother and an absent father. Both of their lives trickle down the drain pretty realistically during a relentless year of chemotherapy. Altogether well done - though I didn't appreciate the insensitive woman doctor - no pediatric cancer doctor could possibly be that hard-edged.

I think of my daughter sitting in her big chair and reading this book in one sitting, thinking about her own friends, and dancing, and trying to figure out what cancer is and why people die, and crying. Of course, she's a girl, and she'll really love it. Big recommendation to all the soft-hearted teenage girls out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars This could possibly be the best book I've ever, ever read!, November 11, 1998

This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
A Time for Dancing was so wonderful, I could not stop crying even after I finished, this book touched my heart not like any other has. I felt that I knew both girls and had a connection with them since I too take ballet and the strange thing is one of my dance teachers name is Linda and I have a good friend named Julie. This was a very hard book to read in the fact that you knew what was going to happen, but when and how it was going to end. I think Davida Wills Hurwin is one of the best authors I've read, thank you for writing and publishing this book, it truely was amazing and inspirational...I'm looking forward to sequal....I hope it is as good as this one.....I would totally thing everyone should read this book, it should be a novel for english classes everywhere...all I can say is WOW!!!!!

I picked up this book at the library a few years ago, and I was hooked after only a few pages. Now, I have my own copy and have read it over a dozen times.

This novel is about two high-school seniors, Samantha and Juliana (Sam and Jules). Their future holds great plans for college and dancing, but when Julie is diagnosed with cancer, their world is shattered. Both girls' lives change for the worse as they try to cope with all that Julie goes through.

Hurwin is an excellent writer, and I cry every time I read the ending. The characters are so well-formed that I often must remind myself that they are only fictional. As I am a junior in high school, I can relate to almost every scene. I recommend this book for anyone in grades 6-12 looking for an awesome read to remember.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could not stop crying, May 17, 2000

This review is from: A Time for Dancing: A Novel (Hardcover)
This is the story of two teenage girls, Sam and Jules who have grown inseparable over the years. When Jules discovers she has cancer, not only does her world turn upside down but so does her best friend's. Davida Hurwin takes you through a whirl of contradictory emotions; anger, sorrow and grief.

I am a sophmore in high school and this was recommended as a quick and easy but wonderful read. It took me only about two hours to get through it. Captivating, I recommend this for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, July 12, 2003
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
This is one of the greatest books I have read. Being only in eigth grade, i have not read that many books and I usually do not enjoy reading, but this was an exception. This book will make you cry, but turning the pages through your tears, anticipating what will happen next. It is the story of two best friends, as one struggles through the battle of cancer. I would recommend this book to almost anyone..I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
A Time For Dancing is definetely by far the best book i've ever read. Samantha and Julie have been best friends since kindergarten and aren't about to let cancer get in the way of their friendship. Davida Wills Hurwin writes it and makes you feel as though you are Julies best friend and you have to get through it along with Julie. While I read this book I cried soo hard I locked myself up in my bathroom sobbing for hours at the end. I'm sure anyone will enjoy this book especially if you are a dancer. All of my friends say this is their favorite book and i'm sure if you read it you will think so 2. So please read it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Friendship, March 6, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (Paperback)
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have cancer? In this book, A Time for Dancing, shares a story about a girl who experiences having cancer at a young age. This book may change your outlook for people who aren't as blessed to be healthy as you may be. A Time for Dancing, by Davida Wills Hurwin, is an emotional book of love and friendship that teaches life lessons to young adults.

Julie and Sam have a special friendship that most teenagers don't have. It is hard for Sam when Julie goes on chemo and it takes all of her energy and time for Sam away. For example, Julie and Sam have been best friends since they were nine years old. They know each other well enough to feel each others pain and to know what they are thinking, so it's really like they both are going to have to fight cancer together (p.63). In addition, when Julie is diagnosed with cancer, Sam is always there for her, and that never goes away. That shows what a great person she is and how much their friendship means to her. Julie's challenge with cancer is hard for everyone she knows but they are supporters of her decisions, whatever they may be. As a result of their friendship, it helps Julie fight the cancer and have a reason to fight it, rather then give up on her self and stay sick.

I highly recommend this book to people because I enjoyed it a lot. For example, I enjoyed this book a lot because of its realistic events that happened. Such as when Julie tells Sam she has cancer (p.63). The events made me feel as if I were there and knew Julie and Sam well. The author's way of writing was descriptive and never made me lost. I didn't want tot put the book down because I was into the book and wanted to know what happened next. In addition, the story was suspenseful and had many twists and turns to keep me reading, like when Julie loses her hair after a promise from the doctor (p.217). That made the book better because I always found time to read or not stop reading this book. Those things all add up to be a great book by being suspenseful, exciting, and a page turner, which makes me enjoy the book even more.

A Time for dancing, in my opinion is a great book in many ways. I think that many teens or female people will enjoy this book because it is story that females or young adults can relate to and understand. I would rate this book high because it was one of the best books that I've ever read. I hope that you will read this book and enjoy it to the highest degree that I did.
