4.0 out of 5 stars Time For Dancing
I saw this in the vidoe shop & didn't bother really reading the back as I'm an avid dance fan so I thought it would be ok. I was surprised at what enfolded as I watched, a story of love & dedication, of achieving your goals despite the set backs life can give us.
It was more than the usual dance movie, it portraid a story of a young girl who has lived to dance all...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for dancers only...
This movie didn't develop the characters very well. The storyline was rather weak and you couldn't help but feel that the two main characters weren't as close as the writers wanted them to appear to be. As for the dance scenes...EXCELLENT! As a dancer and choreographer, I will buy this movie as a point of reference only. If you're into strong storylines and well developed...

It was more than the usual dance movie, it portraid a story of a young girl who has lived to dance all her life, and when she's finally almost where she wants to be, fighting to reach her ultimate dream - acceptance at Juliard.

Anyone who enjoys dance movies will enjoy this one but you may find a tissue may be handy also. I found myself re-thinking my life & realising everyday is a bonus, live life now whilest you can.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring and, yes, sad movie, June 10, 2005
This review is from: A Time for Dancing (DVD)
Honestly, the only reason I bought this movie was because of Larisa Oleynik. Being a longtime fan, I have to say that I was thrilled to see her back acting, and I was pleasantly surprised and quite glad that she did such a great movie as this... And she did an amazing job. It is a very emotional, and somewhat depressing movie... if you let it be. In the moment of being about to lose virtualy everything, she presses on and makes the most of what time she has left. I found it to be incredibly inspiring, with a great message of how it's better to fully live and enjoy what life you have left than suffer excruciating pain to merely allow you to get by.

I recommend this movie, not as a dance movie, although it is obviously filled w/ great dance scenes, but as a good movie in general...

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly amazing, October 2, 2004

Wow is all I can say. I expected another cheesy dance movie (not that that is bad!). As a dancer, I still enjoy any movie about dance, even the extremely cheesy ones. This one, however, reached far beyond the typical "dance movie" storyline. It incorporated love, bonds, friendship, determination, and realism. It went beyond following the main character and delved into the personalities of all involved. So, the difference between this movie and other typical dance movies, is that it grips your heart and makes you want to be a better person because anything can happen at any time.

This movie didn't develop the characters very well. As a dancer and choreographer, I will buy this movie as a point of reference only. If you're into strong storylines and well developed characters, don't bother. But if you're looking for ideas artistically for dancing, it's a "must have."

1.0 out of 5 stars If you loved the book..., September 21, 2005

...then please, do yourself a favor and stay far away from the movie. I will never understand why filmmakers obtain the rights to novels like "A Time For Dancing", only to create movies that deviate so far from the book that they shouldn't even be allowed to carry the same name. It is just tragic what was done to this beautiful story. So many things, big and small, were changed from the book, and in this case change is NOT good.

What made the novel so special was primarily the friendship between Julie and Samantha. They were more than best friends, they were a part of each other, and that came through the pages of the book so clearly that I was envious of what they had together. The movie turned their relationship into a sorry case of hero worship on Samantha's part, while Julie needed Sam only to tell her how wonderful she was - something the movie Sam accuses her of. In the book, the girls' friendship was strengthened by their shared passion for dancing, and both of them eloquently expressed what it meant to them. But here, Julie is the one with talent, while Samantha doesn't seem to care much but only dances because Julie does. They even reversed the girl's physical appearances by having Julie be a blond and Samantha a brunette.

The whole spirit of "A Time For Dancing" is destroyed in a cheesy, poorly written disease of the week type film that apparently went direct to video, and deservedly so. Please don't waste your time. Read the book (and it's sequel) by Davida Wills Hurwin instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT DANCE MOVIE!, April 3, 2005

This is a great movie, and though it might sound untrue...something as tragic as gettin bone cancer in a young dancer has happened. It happened at my studio and we lost a VERY good young dancer to stomach caner...so this movie hit close to home. I thought the actors were amazing, even though some of the lines were kinda corny, it doesnt matter...it seems very true in those circumstances. The dancing is very good as well, although I should warn you that its mostly Jazz and Modern dance...NOT BALLET like i thought it would be.
If you love dance movies than YOU SHOULD BUY THIS!! its worth it...its up there with Center Stage and Truning Pointe!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Movie--Read the books!, October 5, 2005

I saw the movie before I read the books so then I had an idea what it was about, but the movie was so different from the books. The books are so full of emotion and they really are alot better than the movie...I wouldn't watch the movies again but I'd definitely read the books. They are great books. I wish I had a relationship that Julie and Sammie have. Well, I hope this helped! :)
Read the books! Way better!
