A Darkly Enjoyable Read.,

This review is from: A Time for Dreams (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm not usually interested in "romance" novels, but I am quite interested in Mary, Queen of Scots, and her third husband, the Earl of Bothwell, which is what inspired me to read this book. And I am glad I did. It is well written, involving, and the hero and heoine are rather more realistic and complex than the characters usually found in this genre. As a Mary and Bothwell "fan," I liked that the book depicted them both favorably. Mary, of course, has had many defenders over the centuries, but Bothwell has not been as fortunate. I was delighted that Holling had the insight to portray him as the tragic hero I believe he was. In short, I'd recommend the book to anyone interested in this type of fiction. Let's hope Holling tries her hand again.

Drochaid Castle, Scotland - 1980 to 1570 and 1996 to 1587. When Audrey Williams as a child visits Drochaid Castle in Scotland with her father, she notices a corridor that no one else does. As she ventures down it she meets a teenager dressed in costume. Frightened by the experience she has with the young man Audrey runs back down the hallway. When she meets up with her father and the rest of the tour group he points to something in the glass case that looks just like hers. Audrey is shaken, it's impossible, how can it be... she just lost it less than five minutes ago in the strange corridor.... A wonderful time travel romance with characters you will remember.

I just finished reading Jen Holling's fabulous debut novel, A TIME FOR DREAMS, and all I can say is "Wow!" What a thoroughly enjoyable, utterly romantic story! Audrey and Brenden make a great pair, and their story is one that will stay with me for a long time. This book goes high on my keeper shelf and Jen Holling goes to the top of my must-buy author list. Thanks for a great read, Ms. Holling!

This is one of the best Time Travel novels I've read. I loved Brenden Ross, he's a wonderful hero. The relationship between he and Audrey was wonderful. If you love historical &/or time travel romances then this is the book for you. I can't wait to read Ms. Hollings future novels!

In 1980, Audrey Williams toured Scottish castles with her parents. They all seemed identical to the young American until she came to Drochaid Castle. While on a guided tour, she notices a corridor that no one else seems to see. Wandering by herself, she meets a teenager in the weird looking section. She quickly races back to the entrance and its electric lights. The teen Brendan Ross searched his castle without finding a trace of the lass. For the next sixteen years, dreams haunt Audrey. Finally with the suicide of her spouse, Audrey decides to return to the castle to learn why that place haunts her every night. She enters that same corridor that no one appears to see, but this time does not flee. Brendan, the Earl of Irvine, still dreams of the lass he fleetingly saw, but time has persuaded him that she was not real. When he sees Audrey again, he feels that she represents an omen that his death bed pledged quest to save Mary Queen of Scots will succeed. Accompanied by Audrey, Brendan begins his crusade not knowing that the two will soon fall in love amidst betrayal. A TIME FOR DREAMS is an enjoyable time travel romance that brings to life the era of intrigue, danger, and treachery that engulf Mary. The story line takes off when the plot intertwines real history with a moving story line. This novel will provide pleasure to sub-genre fans and readers of historical romance. The enticing lead couple struggles to surmount the time differential and treason. Jen Holling writes an entertaining tale that will surprise readers that this is her first story. Harriet Klausner

I so enjoyed Jen Holling's Brides of Bloodstone trilogy I had to find all she had written. The two following the trilogy with the vampire twist is not to my taste but still, I like the way Holling writes.
And maybe others will appreciate being forwarned that this book is just dark and depressing. When I read fluff I want a happy or exciting moment somewhere. There wasn't one. Even the ending left me flat. Besides other issues I have with the characters, the heroine couldn't seem to make up her mind whether she was staying in the past or going back to her time. She stayed because she was sure the hero was going to commit suicide like her first husband. I never got that he was suicidal - just noncommunicative. I trudged through this and the only happy moment I had was when I got to the last page.

This is Holling first published book and she has set a high strandard to follow. It is a fast read, almost too fast. She combines romance humor and suspence all in one book. Without one over riding the other. It will be interesting to see if her other books are as good. A great book for a nice cozy reading spot. A great time travl story without all the supersention that occurs around orther portal to different time peroids Jo Anne

Jen Holling's book is one of the most interesting and sexy time travels I've ever read. A Time for Dreams is nothing like a first novel: beautiful prose, historical accuracy that isn't obtrusive, sex that's worth reading again and again. Am I the only one dying to know what happens to Gavin? Write another soon, please, Jen!
