A Time to Fish, A Time to Dry Nets,
By Amy Daugherty (Juneau, Alaska) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Time to Fish and A Time to Dry Nets (Paperback)
I love this book. It is entirely authentic and describes the history (and demise) of commercial fisheries in the Great Lakes region. In this age of increasing franchises and stripmalls, the ability for individuals to make their living simply and in a means connected to the earth, is giving way to misleading political spins designed for the uninformed masses. I live in Alaska and we hope to retain our commercial fishing way of life as long as possible, but politically it's all uphill. The fisheries in this book are now sadly, pure history.

I got this book when I was a little girl - my father got an autographed copy at the bait shop in Warroad. I have spent many, many days fishing on lake of the woods in both the summer and in winiter - I really like to read local authors but often find the writing sub-par. Not in this case though - Mr. Johnston writes well and truly knows how to tell the stories.
