Terrific, but a little incomplete,

This review is from: Time Flies: The Best of Huey Lewis & the News (Audio CD)
I really loved Huey Lewis and the News when they were at their hit-making peak in the mid and late 1980s (and I continue to love them). This collection includes most of their terrific bar-band hits. SPORTS is well-represented with tracks such as "Heart of Rock and Roll" and "I Want a New Drug." I'm also pleased that two of their earlier hits are here: "Workin' for a Livin" (which could be their theme!) and "Do You Believe In Love" (which sounds better than ever). However, two of my favorite songs from the band are not here: "Hip to Be Square" (which went to #3) and "Jacob's Ladder" (their 3rd #1 song). Without those songs, the collection seems a bit incomplete. The band includes several songs recorded for this CD, and they sound fine. However, these aren't the hits we really love from Huey! Overall, a good collection that should satisfy most fans and hopefully make the band some new ones.

I grew up in the 80's and some of my all-time favorite songs were from Huey Lewis & The News. "Heart & Soul" and "Power Of Love" have to be my two favorites off this cd. Listening to this Cd like most of the other 80's Cd's that I have, gives me a sense of nostalgia that takes me back to when music was actually good. Now most of the music sounds mostly like rap and not much of it is even listenable. The 80's were the good old days and we'll never see them again unfortunately, but this cd will give you a sense of some of the good things that happened. This is a great cd but I can't give it five stars because I don't see why "Hip To Be Square" wasn't included on here. After all this is Greatest Hits.

I have two complaints about this collection: No "Hip To Be Square" and no "Back in Time". I'm especially upset about the omission of H2BS because that is my favorite Huey tune and my original LP was destroyed in a basement flood.
Now for the good news: All the tracks on the collection are superb. The remastering is crystal clear and pitch perfect. My favorite of the songs here, and one of my all time favorite songs period is "Heart of Rock and Roll". Sadly, I don't live in one of the cities mentioned, but I can imagine the thrill for those who do when they hear the name of their town. (I used to work in Oklahoma City, so that is when I cheer). "I Want a New Drug" was something of a scandal when it came out, but when people took the time to actually LISTEN to the lyrics, they understood it was in NO WAY pro-drug song. Quite the contrary! I recommend this collection to anyone who likes feel-good music, but a little LOUD because this is a kicking set of songs!

THIS NEWS DOESN'T DELIVER WHAT IT BEST COULD,

A respectable but not fantastic `Greatest Hits` CD, including quite a few band effective works. Perhaps a four-star rating but I don't believe this group/label effort counts as one level below perfection. As brought to attention by other reviewers, significant epic tunes have been left out in this chart summary. The likes of Walking On A Thin Line, Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do, Jacob's Ladder and Hip To Be Square all easily have been replaced by say maybe the last four tracks. The addition or inclusion of Back In Time, Perfect World, and I Know What I Like would also have been to most every fan's credit - giving the boot perhaps to songs #5, 7 and 10. Were this arrangement such applied, this Best Of disc would then furthermore have been complete. In comparison, taking notice of the `Beatles 1` CD and its porportions, I'd think maybe even all the above hits(+) could somehow have found space to be included. However, because Mr. Lewis and his group players continue to so-call `humble themselves` with their other compilations on the market, fans remain left basically with slim musical pickin`s. As far as I am concerned, any band history crackdown represents similar to that of files constituting a computer registery. If any or several important songs (files, folders, etc.) are missing, the rest don't seem to run nearly as best they should or drop out completely. Until the appropriate anthology is released (and who indeed knows when), support followers I guess have no choice but to make do with what today is available...

This is the Best?,
This review is from: Time Flies: The Best of Huey Lewis & the News (Audio CD)
Okay, so Huey Lewis & The News wasnt the biggest band of the 80s, but with the success of "Back to the Future," they were pretty popular and had some decent hits. This is supposed to be a collection of, "The Best" of Huey Lewis & the News, but h0ow can it be "the best when it is missing some of their BIGGEST hits?Noticeably absent: "Hip to be Square" How can it be a greatest hits collction when it's missing two of their biggest? Huey Lewis wasn't big enough to warrant a second volume of their greatest hits, so everything should be available on one disc. It's likely they couldn't secure the rights to "Out of Time" but I find that odd considering Power of Love was also from the "Back to the Future" soundtrack and they got that. Regardless of whether they could get the rights to the song, the fact that it is missing makes this CD lacking, and not truely deserving of the title "Best of."

Greatest hits?,

While all the songs on this album are good, I have just one question: What kind of Huey Lewis Greatest Hits CD doesn't include "Hip To Be Square"?

Cool 80's music!,

Huey Lewis & The News are a cool band from a cool decade. Their unique sound fuses together a broad spectrum of musical talents. In addition to guitar, bass, and drums, they also play Sax, Keyboards, and Huey plays a harmonica on occasion. This is a great collection from their heyday, 12 greatest hits and 4 new tracks from '96. I liked the new tracks fairly well, but the greatest hits are my fav tracks. Anyone who remembers the 80's will know these great songs. The classic 'The Power Of Love' from the "Back To The Future" soundtrack is my fav. Also 'I Want A New Drug', 'The Heart Of Rock-n-Roll', 'Heart And Soul', 'Stuck With You'(my 2nd fav), 'Doing It All For My Baby', 'Bad Is Bad', and 'Do You Believe In Love' are here. 'Trouble In Paradise'(live), and an accapella track 'But It's Alright'. All songs are digitally remastered so they sound even better than ever. Cool songs from a cool decade are what you'll get with this collection. If you don't have it, get it. ROCK ON!

Missing A Couple of Hits But Still Great,

I've been a fan of Huey Lewis for a long time. Like a lot of people, I discovered the band from the Back to the Future films. If you don't own all of the albums yet, this is the best place to start. It has all the hits you need from the band, well almost. With great songs like "Stuck with You" and "Power of Love", you can't help but wonder why they didn't include other hits like "Back in Time" or "Hip To Be Square". But for this price, it is a bargain, it's worth a lot more. This band is one of the greatest of all time and you do yourself a favor if you get this record! It's great.

It's good, but missing a lot of hits,

Time Flies is supposed to be the best of the Huey Lewis & The News but it misses the mark. Whoever was in charge of track selection really missed the boat on this one. First off there are a lot of great songs on this album including 5 tracks from the excellent Sports album: "Heart And Soul", "I Want A New Drug", "Heart of Rock & Roll", "If This Is It", and "Bad Is Bad." A case could be made to have included "Walkin' On A Thin Line" instead of "Bad Is Bad" but at least the biggest hits from Sports are here. Other excellent tracks include "The Power of Love", "Stuck With You", "Do You Believe In Love" and "Doing It All For My Baby." All of these tracks were huge hits and still sound fresh today. The problem with this complilation is that it is missing so many hits like "Hip To Be Square", "I Know What I Like", "Couple Days Off", "Perfect World" and one of their three #1 hits, "Jacob's Ladder." The album contains four new tracks which with the exception of "100 Years From Now" are a big dropoff in quality from the rest of the album. The band has another greatest hits album via import called "Greatest" that has a way better track selection but is hard to find. Hopefully someday The Essential Huey Lewis & The News will be released featuring a more definitive tracklist.

Great music, but missing key tracks,

This is a great collection of songs. You can't go wrong with hits like "Do You Believe In Love", "The Power Of Love", or anything off of the classic "Sports" album--"The Heart of Rock & Roll", "I Want A New Drug", "Bad Is Bad", etc. The four new songs at the end are all very good as well--but they are included at the expense of some key tracks that should also be included. How do you leave off huge hits off the "Fore" album like "Hip To Be Square" and the #1 "Jacob's Ladder"? "I Know What I Like" was another good hit off that album. "Walking On A Thin Line" is another track that could have been included from "Sports". Also, there is nothing from some later albums...songs like "Perfect World" and "Couple Days Off" should have been included to better cover the band's entire career. Nonetheless, I still love these guys, and I enjoy this album. For sure it brings back a lot of fond '80s music memories with that "doo wop", party pop/rock sound. Recommended for new and old fans of the band alike, but not by any means an all-inclusive collection. |
