Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4. Patrick, author of Ma Dear's Old Green House (see review, p.978) and others, joins the editors of a popular classroom newsmagazine to craft this entry in the new Timefor Kids Biographies series. For readers in the middle to upper range of the weekly's broad readership, these spin-offs, formatted (somewhat misleadingly) like easy readers and emblazoned with the familiar red-and-yellow logo, feature lively journalistic design, excellent photographs drawn from the Time-Life archives, and a polished narrative extended with sidebars. In this book, there's a concluding interview (a recurring feature in the series) with Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon--whose own, browsable Promises to Keep [BKL F 15 04] is a natural next step. A different writer has collaborated with Time-Life's editorial staff on each book in the series, which currently includes titles on John F. Kennedy, Theodore Roosevelt, and Harriet Tubman. This is a biography for kids on Jackie Robinson. He was a famous African american baseball player. He had to work really hard and ignore rude comment from many fans. Most people in his days did not like black and whites playing together. He took the bad and pushed it aside and became a better person and player!

The book was not too long and not too short. It contained the right amount of information for kids.

I would recommend this book to kids who are learning about the Jackie Robinson. I learned a lot from reading this book. He is a great role model for kids today.

I purchased several of the Time Life For Kids books and they are great. I have 9-year-old twin boys who are in 4th grade, and they love them! I would strongly suggest these books for any children who are interested in learning more about a specific legend or if learning about a specific legend is required for class work, book reports, etc.

Great price too!

I wanted to introduce my students to Jackie Robinson prior to the movie coming out, so that they had some background knowledge about him. This book also introduced my students to the many different parts of non-fiction text, such as titles, sub-titles, pictures and captions, glossary, index, timelines, etc. All the while, my students found out what a brave man Jackie Robinson was, and how he was the first black American to have the courage to help desegregate baseball, which eventually led to desegregation in many other areas, outside of sports. All the facts about his encounters with racism were clearly summarized in this book. It was an "eye-opener" for some of my students! Loved the book, and will continue to use it in my classroom.

I bought this for a ten year old who doesn't have an understanding of our nation's history when it comes to civil rights. I was nervous to get this for him, because I know he struggles with reading, and quite openly says he HATES it. However, he loves sports, so I thought a book about Jackie Robinson might bridge the divide.

He skimmed the book. He SKIMMED THE BOOK! And then he started talking to me about what he'd skimmed, quizzing me, for instance, on when Jackie Robinson was born. You guys, coming from this child, that's a home run. And I thoroughly suspect he'll actually read it later...when I'm not around to see, lol. What that should say to you is this is a very engaging book that will pull in even the most reluctant of readers. :)

There are LOADS of pictures in the book, which helps break up the text and I think was part of what made it less intimidating. (To the point that his five year old brother also enjoyed looking through the book!) I read it for content before I gave it to the big brother, and it's spot on. It talks about the challenges Jackie Robinson faced in a way that kids can connect with, and I learned a lot about him from the book.

Overall, awesome book, highly recommend!

I bought this book for my nine-year-old grandson after he went to see the movie of Jackie Robinson's career. He liked the book very much and felt that it gave a lot more information about his early life and other information that was not included in the movie. It was very suitable for his age.

I had no idea what torment Jackie Robinson had to endure to play baseball. A real eye-opener, a valuable lesson in courage and patience. Young people need to know the history of the first African American in the major leagues
