With "Time Out" and "Time Further Out" the Dave Brubeck Quartet made quite a splash among jazz fans in the '60s. The two albums together constitute an exploration of meters and rhythms that were extremely unusual in their day (the albums came out in '59 and '61 respectively). Most likely, they had broad influence on the subsequent development of metric complexity and sophistication in jazz. Brubeck's style blends elements of pop and classical music with a genuine jazz sensibility, and these sides capture that very well. Dave's brother Howard did transcriptions of both albums, not just the second one reviewed here. They are simpler than note-for-note, but capture both the heads and the improv choruses accurately at a moderate level of difficulty. For the most part, the improvs are Dave's, but on "Take Five" for example, Paul Desmond's solo is included. This is really good stuff for the historically minded student of jazz, for anyone wanting to explore Dave's style a bit, or for anyone who was around back in the day and would enjoy reliving the buzz a bit.
