brilliant,

This review is from: Time To Grow (Audio CD)
I bought this album digitally before the cd release date.
Simply put, it is a brilliant second album. This is my favorite ensemble singing by a contemporary bluegrass/Americana/acoustic string music group. There are many wonderful individual singers out there, of course, but no existing *group* I know of matches the Lovell Sisters for beautiful two- and three-part harmony singing. For harmony singing this good in a bluegrass band I'd have to go back to the Stanley Bros (with Carter) or Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys. I know this is extremely high praise, but it's the truth, to my ears anyway. The playing is also wonderful, a big step beyond the playing of the first album (which was already pretty darn good). They play together with an elegant complexity that never sounds "overplayed" (that is, each note counts -- they avoid empty displays of technical virtuosity). The album shows a lot of promise in the area of songwriting, as well. The original songs are impressively good and make me excited about the songs that are still to come. This album gets better each time I listen to it. If you like beautiful, tasteful singing and playing, check it out.

Usually I do not listen to music in this genre. I found this song checking out free downloads on Amazon. Let me tell you that it is one of my favorite songs right now. My 12 y/o loves the strings in this song and I love the vocals. I read the Wiki entry on these young women and I am impressed. I am a soul, blues and R & B fan and even though this song would not be considered such I hear a soulfulness in it that I love.

A Wonderful Find,

Wife and I were sitting in our home workroom one afternoon when she pulled out a magazine. "Look up some of these musicians." she said. One of the groups on the list was The Lovell Sisters. I fired up ITMS and played a few of the clips. After listening to the clips, I bought "Time to Grow."
I am pleased I did. This work grows on me as I listen to it. Although I'm not a huge bluegrass fan, I appreciate good music in many genres and continue to expand my knowledge of good music. This work represents "good music." Their playing is very good and their voices blend exceptionally well. There is an innocence about the music, perhaps a purity, that I find refreshing. If you like the bluegrass/Americana genre of music, then you should give The Lovell Sisters a good listen. Spend some time with the music and I think it will grow on you. It sure has on me.

These sisters are amazing; love this CD! I heard 'Time to Grow' on the radio and decided to take a chance and check out their CD - it's fantastic! Kind of reminiscent of the Wreckers gone a little Celtic? The harmonies are beautiful, and the music is both inspiring and a little haunting in the depth of it's melodies - but not in a sad way, in a moving way, the way only Irish music can do. But it's not really Irish...hmmm...having a hard time pegging these talented sisters into a musical hole, and that's a good thing. Highly recommended!

Three sisters and some other musicians: so young and then making music like this. I'm really jealous of such talent.
The Lovell Sisters don't exist anymore (the oldest sister quit), but now you can look for Larkin Poe, equally good. Don't hesitate to buy this album.

I happened to learn about these talented sisters by accident on the Oprah website. I was actually reading an article about the best bakery in America, when the description about these gals caught my eye. I am not a huge bluegrass fan, but this cd is a wonderful collection of songs. The vocals and instrumentals are crisp, clean, and cleverly composed. There is something both classic and contemporary about their sound, which I feel is hard to achieve. I was taken with how nicely the music seems to flow and the seamless harmony is definitely notable. I agree that being sisters and understanding how to musically complement one another so intrinsically shows in their music. Buy this. You won't regret it!

HEY ~~ WHAT YOU WANT.... a singer or a dancer?
This is the epitome of good country in a bluegrass vein .. just enough to call it country, and enough to also call it bluegrass. Not the typical commercialized bluegrass that is inherent to the current marketplace, but a real feel for fun, and singing, and making good music. I think this songbook continues in the tradition of making the music "yours" - owing the songs, and this group 'owns' these songs, in their singing style, their harmonies, and their musicianship... (A-Pickin' & A-Grinnin') Its always fresh to find some music that fits so well that you find yourself thinking that it almost doesn't fit within the boundaries. If you know what I mean, you are either a musician, or a bit loose. Either way, its just good fun and great music!
