Book Description

7 and up2 and upTime For Kids

Young John F. Kennedywas a mischief maker, but he also had a serious side. He cared about people's problems and, with his words, could easily persuade others to go along with his ideas. As he grew up, Kennedy's family decided that he was meant for great things -- the presidency of the United States.

TIME For Kids® Biographies help make a connection between the lives of past heroes and the events of today. Kennedy's desire to help Americans -- and others around the world -- is as important now as it was forty years ago.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5 - These beginning biographies have simple texts set upon beautifully arranged spreads with crisp full-color and black-and-white photographs. The first book introduces Kennedy's family and childhood, health problems, education, military service, literary pursuits, political campaigns, marriage, and fatherhood. The Bay of Pigs invasion, Cuban Missile Crisis, Cold War, civil rights movement, and his assassination are all discussed. Sidebars highlight the youngest presidents, Jackie's White House tours, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (a bit of a stretch), Rosa Parks (a "mystery person" inclusion), and "John, Jackie, & Caroline after the White House." The second book describes Roosevelt's childhood; health problems; and love for animals, nature, and learning. The untimely deaths of both his mother and first wife are described as is his subsequent marriage to Edith and their family. Roosevelt's efforts to reform local, state, and national politics are noted as is his military service with the Rough Riders, success in building the Panama Canal, and establishment of 230 million acres of national park land. Sidebars focus on Roosevelt's home museum, Mount Rushmore, his "Big Stick" policy, and the story of the Teddy bear. While the coverage is somewhat superficial, the eye-popping layout of these titles makes them serviceable additions for most collections. - Laura Scott, Farmington Community Library, MI

This review is from: Time For Kids: John F. Kennedy: The Making of a Leader (Paperback)
I purchased several of the Time Life For Kids books and they are great. I have 9-year-old twin boys who are in 4th grade, and they love them! I would strongly suggest these books for any children who are interested in learning more about a specific legend or if learning about a specific legend is required for class work, book reports, etc.
Great price too!

5.0 out of 5 stars neat book, January 31, 2005
This book is all about the life of John F Kennedy. It told about when he was born, his marriage and his death. Here are some interesting facts I learned of John F. Kennedy. He was a member of the Peace Corps. He wrote 2 books. He met with Martian Luther King. In back is a helpful time line of events.

The book was not too long and not too short. It contained the right amount of information for kids.

I would recommend this book to kids who are learning about the presidents. I learned a lot from reading this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Making of a Leader, June 3, 2011
This review is from: Time For Kids: John F. Kennedy: The Making of a Leader (Paperback)
Reason for Reading: read aloud to my son as part of our history curriculum.

We've really enjoyed the books in this series and this one was no exception. Telling the story of JFK's life, briefly, from birth to assassination in a lively, interesting narrative with lots of photographs that contain extra information in their captions. There are also a few sidebars throughout which bring further details to the table other than those discussed in the text. It is in one of these sidebars we learn of the futures of Jackie, John Jr and Caroline. Pleasantly enough, the book restricts itself to John Kennedy and barely mentions any of the clan. Of course we meet his parents, but other than being told and shown a picture that he came from a big family we are only introduced to Joe,Jr. an older brother who died in the war and, obviously, Robert, as he was at Attorney general. Otherwise the book stays on focus with John, giving plenty of information of his pre-presidency days, a chapter on Jackie's influence on the world and politically focusing on Cuba, the Soviet Union and Civil Rights. A very enjoyable book. This series is highly recommended for brief, yet meaty, glimpses into the lives of famous Americans.
