A long time ago, I used to get a lot of these compilations that would arrive in the mail. This one stood out for me. To a teenager in the early 90's, this was like a gift from heaven saying "Here, son - this is alternative music".
Now, nailing all of the punk era's great songs is impossible in one CD. Given that this is part of whole "Sounds of the Seventies" series, it's only a brief encapsulation of the punk sound. However, it does get a little of everything, from the "Beach Blanket Bingo" insanity of the B-52s to the snotty velocity of the Dead Boys. This CD makes a lot of obvious choices (namely tracks 1-7), but it also goes for some under the radar choices. This disc was my first exposure to the Cramps, Pere Ubu, Big Star, Devo, the Dead Boys, and Roky Erickson. If you're looking to dip your toe in the Punk/New Wave era, this will do the job, but only as a start. So many great bands aren't here that should be - Black Flag, Circle Jerks, The Damned, U.K. Subs, Wire, the Misfits, Minor Threat. If you're looking for compilations that are area specific, I heartily recommend every volume of Rhino's D.I.Y. series. Look it up.
