3.0 out of 5 stars Indie Rock's Next Generation November 8, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Stars of Track and Field have a bit of a unique back story. When their original bassist, Moxley Stratton, left the band, the remaining members opted to move forward without a replacement. Many critics gave Stars of Track and Field's first mainstream release, Centuries Before Love and War, positive reviews for this very reason. While I agree Stratton's departure forced the band in a new direction, replacing a bass guitar with bass synthesizer effects is not a crowning achievement in my eyes. However, that is not to say that Stars of Track and Field are not deserving of their critical acclaim.

A Time for Lions, Stars of Track and Field's second full length release with Wind-Up Records, is less electronic than their first album which seems to suggest they have found the sound they are most comfortable with. While no official bassist is listed as a member of the band, they have definitely brought the instrument back which does nothing but add to the grandiose of their arena ready singles. The album opens with "Racing Lights," a track that teases the listener with four seconds of electronic effects fading in before a powerful downbeat announcing the arrival of a more refined and established band destined for greatness.

The true test of the Indie Rock genre is often in the band's ability to succeed with both powerful rock anthems and heartfelt ballads on the same record. With "End of All Time," a song reminiscent of Augustana's "Sweet and Low," Stars of Track and Field have done just that by the end of track two. There are still, however, weak points on the album further along. Tracks like "The Stranger" and "Safety in Numbers" are lacking in instrumentation and feel drastically drawn out.

Not nearly as good as Centuries Before Love and War. I liked this band but this second album didn't scratch the itch.

4.0 out of 5 stars A reminder of their live performance May 26, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I first heard Stars of Track and Field last month at a Blue October concert, and they were great. They reminded me of previous bands I've seen open for Blue October--The Damnwells, The Kin, and Lovedrug. This band is definitely for those who enjoy music that isn't so typical... so common in today's music culture.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're all crazy. February 2, 2010
By Drew T.
Format:Audio CD
Oh no! A band went on and changed! They didn't make the same exact album again! Whatever will we do?!

Except here they changed for the better. Like Coldplay with their latest album, sure you can say they went more mainstream--merely because the music is more accessible. This doesn't mean there's any less value to these songs, and in fact, I'd say there's more, because a true fan can appreciate these just as much as the last batch, but they're gonna gain a whole lot more fans from this, at that.

Whine all you want, but I'm thrilled. This is incredible.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun album December 15, 2009

This is a band with so much potential. "End of all Time" and "In Bright Fire" are two of the best songs I've heard all year. These songs have the alternative pop power of Coldplay or Snow Patrol, but Stars of Track and Field still have their own original sound. A couple of the songs " Peeling Away" and "Through the Static" sound too much like Blue October for my taste, and maybe that's all right for you, but most of the album is right on. A Time for Lions also shows an evolving sound since the last album Centuries Before Love and War. Melodic indie sound, yet sometimes spacey-- alternative at its best in 2009.
