Sandoval's Trumpet Supremacy Is One for the Ages,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Time for Love (Audio CD)
Every jazz aficionado dreams of finding an album that uniquely distinguishes itself by artistically transcending the thousands of albums less rewarding, less memorable, and less accomplished. Miles Davis' preeminent album, "Kind of Blue", is generally accepted as an unprecedented album of such refinement and rarity. It's doubtful if any album will ever depose Davis' scintillating gem from 1959, but Sandoval's "A Time for Love" certainly reaches heights reserved only for albums of consummate distinction. Similar to Davis' album, the music on "A Time for Love" is so emotionally eloquent and moving, vestiges of its allure remain in our mind long after hearing these standards from Gershwin, Mercer, and Porter as well as classical compositions from Faure, Piazolla, and Ravel. Sandoval is trumpeter supreme as he superbly coaxes restrained beauty from each of the fourteen songs. This is an album not to be missed. Even if you don't purchase it, at least listen to it in its entirety as full length songs on Rhapsody. Chris Botti, Monica Mancini, Shelly Berg, and Kenny Barron make notable contributions to the album, but it is the passion and purity of Sandoval's execution that leaves a lasting impression of his exquisite tonal expression. Unlike Miles Davis' album, the substance of this album is not "groundbreaking". Nevertheless, these tunes have a sound and style just as captivating. The accompaniment by a fine rhythm section along with sparse and subdued orchestral arrangements, key elements chosen for this music, contribute appreciably to these melodies. The renditions of both pavanes, one shared with Chris Botti, are fraught with heart-felt lyricism. "A trumpet and flugelhorn designed specifically for this project" brings forth the supremacy of Sandoval's masterful sound. His album, "A Time for Love", is one for the ages, perhaps, a classic, always to be acknowledged and treasured as one of the elite few.

In my 33 years as a trumpet player, marching band and drum and bugle corps instructor and judge, this is the finest sounding trumpet player that I have ever heard. Arturo Sandoval has raised the bar , bringing the trumpet to sound better than any other trumpet player that I have ever heard.
