Sandoval's Trumpet Supremacy Is One for the Ages,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Time for Love (Audio CD)
Every jazz aficionado dreams of finding an album that uniquely distinguishes itself by artistically transcending the thousands of albums less rewarding, less memorable, and less accomplished. Miles Davis' preeminent album, "Kind of Blue", is generally accepted as an unprecedented album of such refinement and rarity. It's doubtful if any album will ever depose Davis' scintillating gem from 1959, but Sandoval's "A Time for Love" certainly reaches heights reserved only for albums of consummate distinction. Similar to Davis' album, the music on "A Time for Love" is so emotionally eloquent and moving, vestiges of its allure remain in our mind long after hearing these standards from Gershwin, Mercer, and Porter as well as classical compositions from Faure, Piazolla, and Ravel. Sandoval is trumpeter supreme as he superbly coaxes restrained beauty from each of the fourteen songs. This is an album not to be missed. Even if you don't purchase it, at least listen to it in its entirety as full length songs on Rhapsody. Chris Botti, Monica Mancini, Shelly Berg, and Kenny Barron make notable contributions to the album, but it is the passion and purity of Sandoval's execution that leaves a lasting impression of his exquisite tonal expression. Unlike Miles Davis' album, the substance of this album is not "groundbreaking". Nevertheless, these tunes have a sound and style just as captivating. The accompaniment by a fine rhythm section along with sparse and subdued orchestral arrangements, key elements chosen for this music, contribute appreciably to these melodies. The renditions of both pavanes, one shared with Chris Botti, are fraught with heart-felt lyricism. "A trumpet and flugelhorn designed specifically for this project" brings forth the supremacy of Sandoval's masterful sound. His album, "A Time for Love", is one for the ages, perhaps, a classic, always to be acknowledged and treasured as one of the elite few.

In my 33 years as a trumpet player, marching band and drum and bugle corps instructor and judge, this is the finest sounding trumpet player that I have ever heard. Arturo Sandoval has raised the bar , bringing the trumpet to sound better than any other trumpet player that I have ever heard.

I have heard of Arturo Sandoval since he came to the States over 20 years ago. I wasn't a big fan of the music he was putting out, but I thought he was a virtuoso. Flash forward to 2011, on a flight to Narita/Tokyo, this was one of the offering on Singapore Airlines's Airbus 380. I looked at the song titles and decided to give it a spin - WOW! WOW! WOW! - This is the kind of music that I can spend the rest of my life listening and not get tired. It's up there with Clifford Brown with Strings and Miles' Kind of Blue. This will be another Desert Island Disc for me for sure. Great Job Arturo. Thanks for baring your soul to us through this music.

The Soft Side of Arturo,
By

This review is from: Time for Love (Audio CD)
I have been following Arturo since his days with Irakere and concerts in "The Place" in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico as well as the Heineken Jazz Fest. The public tends to venerate trumpet players for their ability to play highly acute notes as well as speed (Bee-Bop) and so on. Being the exceptionally gifted musician he is, Arturo excels in all these aspects; being also from the Caribbean, rhytm is also embeded within his DNA.However, eventhough the trumpet is not associated to soft music, properly played, it can be a tremendously romantic instrument. In this sense Arturo presents his exquisite soft side, (I believe that it is more challenging to express in this mood than in the rhytmic extravaganzas). A "Time for Love" is a deeply introspective and mellow recording, with an exquisite selection of themes. Do not play this CD as background music, because inevitably you will quit whatever you are doing and dedicate yourself to istening... !! Only wish he had included in this CD, the piece "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life" from Michelle Legrand (A good frien of him) played in the Fluggel Horn. I had the opprotunity of listening his arrangement more than 20 years ago and still remember it. Enjoy a rare, exquisite piece of music.

I bought this album on the basis of having heard one selection (Windmills) on FM radio but it so far exceeds my expectations...every track is a treasure! I especially enjoyed Faure's Pavan. It is nice to hear Arturo "just playing" without all the acrobatics and athleticism of trying to emulate the Dizz.

I was very impressed when I listened to the samples of this CD on Amazon. After I received it in the mail, I immediately played it and was totally delighted. Not only are the song selections excellent but the arrangements and the performance by all of the musicians involved in this project are first class. Sandoval's playing is superb. Phrasing, tone, improvisations are outstanding. Some of these songs, with which I'm quite familiar (having played them myself) are given a fresh, new life. It's one of my top favorite albums of all time. I recommend the purchase of this beautiful CD album to everyone who loves jazz ballads.

. . . ordered two copies of this CD "Time for Love." The CD is excellent, but they arrived with the cases cracked. One was a gift so I had to explain why I had repackaged and that it was actually a new CD. It's the first time I have received product with damaged packaging. CD's were not mailed from Amazon but came from an associated seller.
