Book Description

July 1, 2004
Danny McCullers was one of the people who made the music just when the Big Bands were going out of style. He loved the life that set him and his fellow musicians a bit apart from the rest of the world. His world was on the bandstand with the colored lights going around, the horns hitting it together, the laughing women dressed in beautiful clothes. It was hotel rooms and all-night cafes and long automobile rides over deserted highways, and, always, there had to be the whisky. But at only thirty-one, his world was deteriorating fast, in a haze of alcohol. At the end of summer, in a small beach town where the band was playing a one-night stand, Danny came to realize that his life might be different-that he still might make it different. He had only to make a choice. 2004 Re-issue Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures a moment in time, August 4, 2005
Touching evocation of a moment in time -- the last days of the Big Bands, the last days of summer at a southern seaside resort. Engaging read. Well drawn, complex characters. Crisp, believable dialogue. Remarkable insight into the workings of a band in action -- fascinating even to a non-musician. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hits All the Right Notes, January 3, 2005
A great story about the real world of a musician's life on the road, set in the big band era of the South -- and about struggles with alcohol. The characters who inhabit this world, plus the family members "back home," really come to life. I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, December 18, 2004
This review is from: A Time Of Music, A Time Of Magic (Paperback)
The author really knows his stuff! As a former traveling musician I really enjoyed the behind the scenes look at the band characters. He nailed the various personalities that seem to be in every band no matter what type or era. The way the author addresses the drug/alcohol abuse is right on; enlightening and heart breaking.
A great nostalgia trip to the Big Band era.
