Diahann Carroll is divine!, July 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Time of My Life (Audio CD)
Carroll's voice has grown even more exquisite with time. While she may be lacking the lung power of her youth, she now has a deeper, more resonant tone that allows her to "sing" the lyrics rather than shout them. Sultry on Cole Porter's "I Concentrate On You"; and melancholy on Leon Russell's "A Song For You" and Kurt Weill's "September Song". Singing with the kind of assurance that only someone with 45 years of experience could possess, Carroll is in top form. This CD is a career summit.

Highly recommended!, August 1, 2003
This review is from: Time of My Life (Audio CD)
I've had this CD for several years and have listened to it regularly, and I have grown to love and appreciate it more with each passing year. Unfortunately, "Time Of My Life" has been deleted but hopefully that is only temporary and some distributor will realize what a gem it is. At 60-something, Diahann Carroll is in peak form on this collection, featuring superb, highly complementary arrangements by Mike Renzi, and a tasteful selection of standards. The result is the strongest, most consistent showcase of Carroll's wondrous talent since 1957's "Diahann Carroll Sings Harold Arlen Songs".
Her voice is powerful and supple, and her range is surprisingly vast. She shines on WHAT DID I HAVE THAT I DON'T HAVE with a restrained, knowing yet potent vocal that is in total contrast to Eydie Gorme's belty, torchy version from the 60's. Carroll's flawless diction, and newfound ability to swing, scares any hint of irony out of Stephen Sondheim's OLD FRIEND, and makes it a bouncy, sunny tribute. In Carroll, Billy Strayhorn's wintry SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR has found a simpatico interpreter, not too tart (like Carmen McRae's) and not too sweet (like Ella's), Carroll's take goes down smooth and easy. Other standouts are I CONCENTRATE ON YOU and SEPTEMBER SONG.
Leon Russell's A SONG FOR YOU is a much-recorded contemporary standard and has been performed by some of the greatest voices of all time: from Donny Hathaway to Karen Carpenter to Aretha Franklin to Billy Eckstine. Miss Carroll's sublime recording of A SONG FOR YOU easily ranks among the very best renditions. Her considerable experience as a dramatic actor is on full display as she goes right for the heart of this epic declaration of love and contrition, and pulls out all the stops. It is a devastatingly emotional tour de force -- when she gets to the lyric ". . .and when my life is OVER", it will hit you hard no matter how many times you've heard it.
The whole affair is great from start to finish.
