Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Our experience of time raises problems insoluble in its own termsand the only hope of resolving them, argues Ricoeur, lies in moving from phenomenology to history and fiction. In this volume Ricoeur concentrates on fiction, discussing in detail novels of James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. He endeavors to show that fiction and history cannot be sharply separated but rather interweave, making the difficulties in the notion of time appear less exigent. Whether one accepts Ricoeur's "solution," one can only admire the author's immense learning. Regrettably, his rebarbative style may prevent this work from having the full impact it deserves. Well, once upon a time, a long, long time ago,I read theoretical books like this, and felt like I was discovering a whole new world. Now I'm only reading for practical assistance for writing my own (2nd) novel, and frankly it felt like I had to hack my way through very dense prose in order to get to the treasures that awaited. But I hacked away and found the treasure. Of course it's been awhile since I read the book so I can't describe it to you in detail, but I think it is well worth reading, whatever your motive. It is full of wonderful discoveries about life and the stories we tell. Ricoeur explores why we humans need stories to at least momentarily anchor our lives, caught as we are in the river of time. KD

Ricoeur, who died in 2005, had an obscure type of fame, but one that will grow exponentially as his ideas are understood more and more. This mind-blowing volume takes Augustine's and Aristotle's views on time and synthesizes them into a position on how narrative works. Great stuff.
