Editorial Reviews

Review

One of the most anticipated albums of 2009 within the underground heavy metal community, The Time of No Time Evermore follows up on the Devil's Blood's euphorically received 2008 EP, Come Reap, which arguably set a new standard for unearthing the roots of heavy metal with its psych- and prog-infused slabs of occult rock. So it goes without saying that expectations are inordinately high for an album that coincidentally marks the 40th anniversary of that fascinatingly eclectic, proto-metal year of 1969 -- the eve of Black Sabbath's definitive forging of the heavy metal genre template via their eponymous 1970 debut. Especially since that template and the vast majority of its subsequent evolutions figure only as a hazy glimpses of things yet to pass amidst the rich variety of styles found in the Devil's Blood's songs (single-minded head bangers be warned). Instead, The Time of No Time Evermore sees the Dutch band achieving what much hyped (especially in retrospect) 70s bands like Black Widow and Coven never could: a visionary blend of hard rock, psych rock, acid rock, and even art rock, dripping with obsessively detailed satanic ritual. Declaimed in haunting, vibrato-laden fashion by singer F, the Mouth of Satan (who generally performs drenched in blood), the band's creative range includes the dusty garage rock riffs of first single "I'll Be Your Ghost," which connects the Nuggets generation to Pentagram; the cleverly named "Christ or Cocaine" (one of the band's earliest demos, reworked), which sounds like the Rosemary's Baby of Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" (i.e. evil!); the beguiling dual guitar harmonies gracing the ten-minute epic "The Anti-Kosmik Magick," which seem to invite classic Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest to the funeral; and, perhaps best of all, the sublime gothic melancholy of "The Yonder Beckons," which one can almost visualize moving King Diamond to tears. In short, for all of their at-times head-spinning diversity, these and the remaining, consistently memorable tracks on offer here add up to the very definition of "proto-metal," as it could only be defined after the fact, ironically enough. Perhaps that's the meaning behind The Time of No Time Evermore s curious title. --Eduardo Rivadavia - The All Music Guide

Product Description

2009 two CD release from the Dutch rockers, an epic work that encapsulates all that defines this cult once and for all. The recording, mixing and mastering process was in the more than capable hands of engineer Pieter G. Kloos, whom the band has worked with since the beginning. The album's artwork was created by Erik Danielsson of Watain, who has also co-written one song on the album. Furthermore, guitar player extraordinaire and good friend of the band, Will Power, added some of his sonic perversion to the album's closing piece 'The Anti-Kosmik Magick'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Devil's Blood - Like A Modern Day Wishbone Ash, October 2, 2010

This band first came to my attention after reading a review in Classic Rock magazine. They are considered a heavy metal band, but to me they are not so much metal than a hybrid of prog, psych, and classic hard rock. In fact the band I am most reminded of here is Wishbone Ash . The album is chock full of harmonic duel lead guitar. Wishbone Ash patented this sound back in the early 70's being expanded upon by Thin Lizzy later in the decade and then by more metal oriented acts like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden later on. The Devil's blood are not nearly as heavy as Priest and Maiden, but there are some similarities there as well. Vocally the band remind me a lot of pre Mickey Thomas era Jefferson Starship (who also used twin lead harmony guitar quite a bit). The lead vocalist in the band is a woman and I found her voice took me a few listens to get used to, but her voice grew on me. The band seem a bit stuck in the gothic horror genre which is all well and good I guess, but their music transcends most of their peers in this category. This is an album that may take a few listens to really sink in. It did not blow me away right off the bat, but after about a dozen spins it has become one of my favorite releases from 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Release. America Should Be Ready For Them!, November 9, 2010

Read the review by the other commentators and purchased the CD. I agreed completely with their appreciation. It's without a doubt a 5 star rating, although not all cuts are memorable. Their music is on the aggressive side, with female vocals, which to me sound just like Heart meets Wishbone Ash, but with the guitars sounding just a bit like Boston. This CD release has 11 cuts, of which the last 6 are just pumping and of which you'll hear over and over again. The cut titled "The Anti-Kosmik Magick" would certainly be a radio hit if it were the 80's, as AOR stations now don't play an 11 minute cut, if they do at all. The later is a very progressive rock sound. So congratulations are in order, excellent release DB! Come play America!

5.0 out of 5 stars weird devilish psych/metal, June 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First time i heard it, the vocals put me off, as well as what i thought was a somewhat mediocre drum work. Plus, I was expecting more sludgy 70's worship a la Blood Ceremony or Cathedral, since that's just what a certain review I read said. So i let it rest for a few days. Then, just last night, after a couple o' puffs, I decided to check it out again, and, wow, brother, was I stoked and moved and surprised. These guys and gal have worked their voodoo on me... This is a truly weird and unique band, and i wonder if we're talking 'bout accomplished kids or seasoned veterans. First thing you gotta keep in mind is that it's actually quite melodic, sometimes even 'soft' metal, but with class and a certain, uncanny dark feel. Since i love comparisons and want to shut the computer off in a few minutes, i'll just let you know that this is like a psychdelic Witchfinder General or King Diamond, but with a better singer (sorry, King, had to get that off my chest). In other words, you'll get a lot of harmonized guitars, a la Maiden, but with the classic Thin Lizzy flavor. Lots of songs sound like mid to late 70's Scorpions, which is great. A bit of Farewell to Kings-era Rush, too. Strucures are somewhat weird, like a jazzier Priest, if you can picture that. I'm just glad bands like this are beginning to sprout and flourish from what we old folk used to call 'the underground', i.e., from out of nowhere, or maybe from under a rock. i think this is very healthy for modern metal, which has become a vast wasteland of inane black/viking clichés (black metal is the glamrock of the 21st century) and super-tough grind macho poser bands. Passionate, magical, haunting. Or could it be that the subliminal messages of this occult ouvre have worked their way into my tired unconscious?!! The devil is in the details!
