The Devil's Blood - Like A Modern Day Wishbone Ash,

This band first came to my attention after reading a review in Classic Rock magazine. They are considered a heavy metal band, but to me they are not so much metal than a hybrid of prog, psych, and classic hard rock. In fact the band I am most reminded of here is Wishbone Ash . The album is chock full of harmonic duel lead guitar. Wishbone Ash patented this sound back in the early 70's being expanded upon by Thin Lizzy later in the decade and then by more metal oriented acts like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden later on. The Devil's blood are not nearly as heavy as Priest and Maiden, but there are some similarities there as well. Vocally the band remind me a lot of pre Mickey Thomas era Jefferson Starship (who also used twin lead harmony guitar quite a bit). The lead vocalist in the band is a woman and I found her voice took me a few listens to get used to, but her voice grew on me. The band seem a bit stuck in the gothic horror genre which is all well and good I guess, but their music transcends most of their peers in this category. This is an album that may take a few listens to really sink in. It did not blow me away right off the bat, but after about a dozen spins it has become one of my favorite releases from 2009.

Read the review by the other commentators and purchased the CD. I agreed completely with their appreciation. It's without a doubt a 5 star rating, although not all cuts are memorable. Their music is on the aggressive side, with female vocals, which to me sound just like Heart meets Wishbone Ash, but with the guitars sounding just a bit like Boston. This CD release has 11 cuts, of which the last 6 are just pumping and of which you'll hear over and over again. The cut titled "The Anti-Kosmik Magick" would certainly be a radio hit if it were the 80's, as AOR stations now don't play an 11 minute cut, if they do at all. The later is a very progressive rock sound. So congratulations are in order, excellent release DB! Come play America!

First time i heard it, the vocals put me off, as well as what i thought was a somewhat mediocre drum work. Plus, I was expecting more sludgy 70's worship a la Blood Ceremony or Cathedral, since that's just what a certain review I read said. So i let it rest for a few days. Then, just last night, after a couple o' puffs, I decided to check it out again, and, wow, brother, was I stoked and moved and surprised. These guys and gal have worked their voodoo on me... This is a truly weird and unique band, and i wonder if we're talking 'bout accomplished kids or seasoned veterans. First thing you gotta keep in mind is that it's actually quite melodic, sometimes even 'soft' metal, but with class and a certain, uncanny dark feel. Since i love comparisons and want to shut the computer off in a few minutes, i'll just let you know that this is like a psychdelic Witchfinder General or King Diamond, but with a better singer (sorry, King, had to get that off my chest). In other words, you'll get a lot of harmonized guitars, a la Maiden, but with the classic Thin Lizzy flavor. Lots of songs sound like mid to late 70's Scorpions, which is great. A bit of Farewell to Kings-era Rush, too. Strucures are somewhat weird, like a jazzier Priest, if you can picture that. I'm just glad bands like this are beginning to sprout and flourish from what we old folk used to call 'the underground', i.e., from out of nowhere, or maybe from under a rock. i think this is very healthy for modern metal, which has become a vast wasteland of inane black/viking clichés (black metal is the glamrock of the 21st century) and super-tough grind macho poser bands. Passionate, magical, haunting. Or could it be that the subliminal messages of this occult ouvre have worked their way into my tired unconscious?!! The devil is in the details!

This album wasn't as immediately as appealing as "Living With The Ancients" by Blood Ceremony was, but I really like it, none the less. It's really a matter of taste and preference. There are some great feels on this album like "10,000 Voices", and some feels that I just am not as fond of, like "Christ or Cocaine." And because there are some weaker spots for me, I gave it 4 stars (I Like It) instead of 5 (I Love It). One thing I think is worth mentioning is that, aside from the front cover, you can't read a single word of the liner notes anywhere at all. Even with a magnifying glass, you can't read a single word - or at least I couldn't. I'm sure the band has some reason for this and it has to be on purpose, as I can't imagine that it was a printing error that they didn't catch before shipping (unless this was a one off mistake on my copy only or a small set before it was caught), but I don't get what the reason is. Even if it's a great reason, the end result is still annoying because I want to be able to read it. Maybe the writing is too evil? But if you're buying this, then I'm sure you can handle the evil nature of the material, so please just give it to us! But anyway, the songs are good, the playing is very good, and there's truly some great stuff. Just not as strong across the board, so I dock it a star for that. Don't let this stop you from buying it - it's very good and likely many people will like it (or love it) more than I do!

I bought the import of this a few months ago and it's been in heavy rotation ever since. The Devil's Blood are pure 70s classic rock with a bit of modern metal thrown in for good measure. Fronted by a female vocalist with a haunting voice, the music offers a killer double-guitar attack. No bad songs anywhere here (or on their debut EP "Come Reap"), and the riffs are nothing less than spectacular. The main thrust of the lyrics all seem to be about the devil and blood (nice!), but the Hammer Horror shtick never gets in the way of some truly thrilling rock and roll.
