5.0 out of 5 stars The best recording by one of the best rock guitarists
I have been a fan of Vinnie Moore since the mid-eighties. This is his best work to date in my opinion. This was his last neo-classical oriented work which I have always thought was unfortunate since his best work was in that vein. That is not to say his latter more blues oriented work is'not good however. I have long suspected that he is trying to get away from...

3.0 out of 5 stars subdued playing from Moore, as Time Odyssey seems to go on for a long time . . .

I have been a fan of Vinnie Moore since the mid-eighties. This is his best work to date in my opinion. This was his last neo-classical oriented work which I have always thought was unfortunate since his best work was in that vein. That is not to say his latter more blues oriented work is'not good however. I have long suspected that he is trying to get away from Yngwie's shadow since they are often compared. Not ot worry, Vinnie is great in his own right and is easily distinguishable from Yngwie. Fans of old Al DiMeola recordings should love this stuff. His tone is sweet and not too processed and his attack is so precise! Imagine DiMeola on steroids. This is Vinnie's best and having Jordan Rudess on keyboards didn't hurt. The interplay between the two is amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars RACE BEYOND THE DOOR ABOVE THE APRIL SKY AS TIME SLIPS BY, October 28, 2002
This review is from: Time Odyssey (Audio CD)
There are certain cds that are timeless. You never get tired of hearing them. TIME ODYSSEY is definitely one of those for me. Hmm...is it a coincidence it is called TIME ODYSSEY? I love the passion and emotion, the complexity--[listen to those lightning fast runs--WOW! If you are a musician, you can not help but admire and appreciate this music!] And together with the skill and presentation of this album, every song is entirely impressive, I could listen to it on repeat all day. (Actually today this is the third time, so far. Not something I normally do. Something I *rarely* do proving to me this is something I need to hold on to.) TIME ODYSSEY *is* guitar wizardy!

TIME ODYSSEY inspires me to become all I can be--and to always remember to Soar! It truly lives up to the definition of its title--an intellectual and spiritual wandering through Time. I love music that takes me away. Transport me, yes! Also, I love these titles--check out the track listings. Awesome. The name of the song is as important as the music, in my opinion. Also the cover art is great, as on MIND'S EYE. What I appreciate most is the track "April Sky," taken from "Air on a G String" by Bach. It is one of those superlative tracks that touches me so deeply, I weep at its beauty and wonder. This track alone is worth buying the cd for!

An interesting note for Dream Theater fans, Jordan Rudess wrote the keyboard music for "Prelude" section in "Into the Future" and the intro to "Message in a Dream."

In the thanks inside the cd pamplet there are so many names listed including George Harrison who wrote "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," Johann Sebastian Bach "for the inspiration," and Vinnie thanked "God for the gift of music." Is this man amazing or what?

THIS IS MUSIC! THE FULL SPECTRUM. My highest recommendation--buy it! 10/10 stars. "Time Odyssey...the journey through life itself."

SOAR!

5.0 out of 5 stars Vinnie's best neo-classical effort, June 1, 2005

More progressive than his debut album "Mind's Eye", "Time Odyssey" was made with a larger budget (ie more studio time and better production values). Every song on this album is incredible, and when put together with "Mind's Eye" and "The Maze" you have the perfect combination of technique, quality songs, and excellent taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong Melodic and Versatile, January 11, 2000
This review is from: Time Odyssey (Audio CD)
I thought Moore's sound was going to die out, especially compared to the likes of Satriani and Vai. However, here I am 6 years later, and I can say there is not much else out there that presents technical skill the way this album does.

It is also a great platform for novices, as was I when I first heard the bach piece, to move into other parts of music I never thought existed.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best guitar albums ever !, May 29, 2003

Being a real fan on the guitar heroes (Blackmore, Malmsteen, Page, May, Satriani, Vai, Clapton, etc...) all I can say is that this album is absolutely amazing.
Has a perfect balance. It's a no-boring-guitar-album (the 90% of my guitar cds collection I can't listen the entire disc), but this one...you can hear it one time, and you better get the "repeat" on in your cd player, 'coz it gets you begging for hear it again....
In spanish : ESTE DISCO EMOCIONA ! (sorry, can't find the translation for this)
I give a 11/10 !!!! God bless this moments of inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of Neo-Classical Music!, December 22, 2001
By
This review is from: Time Odyssey (Audio CD)
First, he's not Malsteen's imitation at all... listen to all his licks... they're beautiful. Guitars sound so clear cut, sweet, and rock. Personally, I knew this record for 8 years since I was in high school and play guitar with my band. I was trying to find my guitar hero, and he's the one. This reord is my all time the most collectable neo-classical guitar hero!!!

This album is probably the best by Vinnie Moore ever. I still listen to it. It is precise and very well composed. If you are a guitarist and want to hear some "Bach Rock" this is the best!

3.0 out of 5 stars subdued playing from Moore, as Time Odyssey seems to go on for a long time . . ., May 30, 2010
This review is from: Time Odyssey (Audio CD)
One of the many talented neo-classical influenced guitarists introduced by Mike Varney on Shrapnel Records in the late 80's, Vinnie Moore burst on the scene with Mind's Eye (1986) an all instrumental outing, that showcased the guitarist's fluid playing style, unique phrasing, and bright shimmering tone. A player with ample technical skill, Moore's music was not about showcasing his ability to shred. His compositions were actually built on melodies, and with a mixture of fast and slow compositions, Mind's Eye might be regarded as being more in the progressive rock category rather than metal. Song's like N.N.Y., Shadows of Yesterday, Lifeforce, In Control, and Mind's Eye, demonstrated not only Moore's technical skills, but his ability to compose and arrange instrumental music.

After an auspicious debut, Moore's follow up recording Time Odyssey (1988), while again showcasing his technical ability, and compositional skills, is still something of a mild disappointment. The mix is less clean and clear, with Moore's guitar tone less distinct. Moore doesn't use a lot of distortion, and generally plays notes very cleanly, but his lead lines do not seem to cut through the mix, as they did on Mind's Eye, and most other subsequent recordings.

Time Odyssey is a longer album, and features many slow songs. Touching the blues, and some spacey grooves, Vinnie goes beyond what he has done before, though he perhaps stretches things a bit. Epics tunes like The Tempest (8:48), and Message in a Dream (9:09), are musical tour de forces, that perhaps could have been just a little more concise. With a number of long meandering tunes, Time Odyssey is a little short in the kick ass rocker department. Pieces of a Picture, or perhaps Race With Destiny, come the closest, but are not straight ahead blasting tunes. Moore's cover of George Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps, was of some note when the album was released, but it is a rather unenergetic tune, even though played at a faster tempo than the original.

Vinnie Moore would have a glorious return to form on his next album, Meltdown (1991), where his playing is infused with massive doses of rock, metal, and funk, that absolutely kills. With his guitar once again slicing through the mix, Meltdown is one of the guitarist's best. While Vinnie Moore fans should definitely check out Time Odyssey, it is not his most upbeat rocking effort.
